Anyone here ever use Drupal.org to build their website?

Just curious as it appears promising with lots of features
and many have recommended it over at the
webmasterworld forum.

Its a great CMS with lots of add-ons. I actually spent 2 hours there today trying to determine if I should use it to run my blog. However, its so much more powerful than just plain blogging. As with most CMS's, its really for running a community type portal: i.e. Newspaper sites, communities, etc.

Example: Here is a list of all the churches that run Drupal
http://groups.drupal.org/node/2700

The learning curve on it is supposedly difficult as well. However, you can't go wrong with "Free"!

I downloaded it last night and there is a long list of stuff to utilize and go through.
Seems to be set up for programmers and webmasters, but hey we all start somewhere and you're right - can't beat free.

Doing a community niche site is something I'm looking into so that would be perfect.

We'll see what happens,

Joe

There are plenty of Drupal resources as well ... check out the books at Amazon.

For someone motivated, they can create a full-scale, customized community site if they are willing to learn. The education is out there for the taking -- buy a book, read it, study it, and take action: Wholla, you have the education (for 1/1000th the price of a college degree) to create a website that can generate 1000's of visitors.

Now as for pegging a revenue model onto the site, that is a wee-bit more difficult. I know selling ad-space can be done but I'm not sure how lucrative that is. I've heard rumors of bloggers making $100K/mo in ad revenues but never found any confirmation of it.
