This is going to sound super weird, but here goes.
Ever since my last visit to the states, I've become smitten with $1 bills.
I have a friend in Atlanta that gets them for me uncirculated direct from where ever it is that they print them. Now the only way for him to get them to me is via international mail. From what I gather, transferring physical currency in the mail is not illegal.. stupid, but not illegal.
The only reason I was fine with potentially having them lost in transit or stolen is because the dollar amount is fairly small.. it's just a large quantity of banknotes.
I've done this twice before with no issues, and this was to be my final shipment. It got rejected by customs, after they opened it. Nothing was taken, and no explanation was given as to why it was refused.
They returned everything to my friend. Seeing as they didn't seize it, I'm going to assume they didn't think much of it. My guess is that they opened it, discovered it was not in fact 'a book', and returned it.
I'm pretty sure it's illegal to mislabel packages, and if the roles were reversed I wouldn't have done so, but then again, you can't exactly write 'Brick of Money' on the package.
I've included a picture of what I"m talking about.
In no way, shape or form is this money laundering or anything like that and I simply wire him an equal amount of money to cover the bills + shipping. I just enjoy the $1 bills and I like to have a brick of them on my desk when I'm working for motivation.
Needless to say I won't be doing this again, but now that I'll be shipping and receiving more and more products from overseas (including the USA), I'm concerned that they might hold packages to inspect them. However I see a lot of people especially on ebay saying that once it's shipped and reached customs that it's 'out of their contol'.
So I'm thinking I should be fine/not liable for delays, even if they do start inspecting more of my packages. I called Border Services but they weren't much help.
If you've had items refused and/or seized by Customs, did it affect future shipments?
Cheers.
