Hey guys, my name is Aubrey and I am a 26 year old based in Dallas, Texas. I wasn’t going to create a progress thread about this because I have a thread I recently commented on in the INSIDERS section and I didn’t want to duplicate the info – but after thinking about it I decided I would create a new progress thread on the outside documenting my newest venture – creating a YouTube channel and a YouTube community.

I have been a part of this forum since I was 20 years old – over the years I have made dozens of threads talking about ideas I had, ventures I wanted to pursue, dreams I had…etc.

I’ve learned an absolute ton over the last 6 years, and have had some good times and some really bad times as well.

I will give you the summary here:

In high school, I made $100k in the stock market by investing in American Airlines stock during their bankruptcy. I then used that money to buy a franchise at 21 years old – when I bought my franchise I was featured in news outlets like Entrepreneur.com, CNBC, Franchise Times..etc.

When I was 25 (November 2018) the franchise ended up closing due to a fire and I decided not to reopen. I then had to figure out what the hell I was going to do for the rest of my life.

Before the fire, I had started working with a franchise-consulting firm and I had a few cars on the car rental app Turo – but those two ventures alone weren’t enough to go off of for a life plan.

I had purchased @Andy Black AdWords course a while earlier, so I used what I had learned about Google Advertising and my past experience with Facebook Marketing and I started doing freelance digital marketing - which I had success with!

So, in 2019 I went from losing my business before the beginning of the year to using digital marketing and consulting as a way to fund my Turo business – by the end of 2019, I had 10 cars on the Turo platform. Between Turo, Consulting, and Freelancing for the first time in my life I was able to make over $100,000 in one year which was huge for me.

Now, I have decided to narrow my focus on projects that I want to pursue and ones I feel like could have some long-term potential.

As I write this I am still doing consulting, and I have 12 active cars on the Turo platform – But, I stopped freelancing in order to focus on Youtube, Turo, and Consulting only.

My goal is to create a YouTube channel surrounding what I have learned over the last 6 years as well as take the subscribers along with me as I grow. I want to get into real estate, expand my investment portfolio and grow my Turo fleet to 20+ cars and I want the channel to follow that journey.

So, this thread will be a place where I will track my subscriber growth, talk about what I am doing and of course listen to feedback from y’all.

Currently, I have been making videos since January 2020 and I have 195 subs. The goal is to get to 500 subscribers by the end of Q2 of this year.

If anyone wants to check out the channel you can find it HERE

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to comment below!

Wow, it's been almost a year since I started this thread and it's been crazy to see where things have been going!

So, as we sit here today March 30th, 2021 - The channel is at 58k subs, and I am averaging about 250k views per month posting videos every day. As of now, the channel makes about $5k-8k per month depending on what the view count is (The last 3 months it's averaged between $7k-$11k)

Over the last few months I have been trying to brainstorm ideas on how I can branch out this audience I have been fortunate enough to grow - and here is where I am at with this effort:

Car Sharing Course: On January 1st I launched a car-sharing course walking users through the process of starting a car-sharing business (Car sharing is the original reason why I started YouTube and it's something I've really been deep into over the last 3+ years). This course has brought in about $3k per month since launching in January. Because of the success of this course, I will be creating more this year.

Patreon: For those of you who are not familiar with Patreon, it's sort of like a YouTube channel behind a paywall - my plan here is to create content that wouldn't do well on YouTube - things like breaking down my investments, diving deep into the numbers but also providing resources for my audience, things like Business plan templates, P&L templates, downloadable resources and more. I am currently building out the downloadable resources, but plan to launch this next month. It will be a subscription of between $5-$10 per month, I will keep y'all posted on how this does.

Second Channel: My Youtube channel I currently have has turned into something I didn't really initially intend for it to be, though I am super happy with it. My original intention was to create a channel documenting what I do on a day-to-day basis to grow my wealth, more like a combination of education videos/vlog style content. Showing what I am doing rather than just talking about it. Well, my channel gained steam with news-related content, and because of this, I no longer feel like it makes sense to post vlog-style videos on this channel. So, I will be creating a second channel to do this - this will be for people who are looking for more entertainment and education rather than the purely informative videos I have now. This will be launching sometime in Q3.

Podcast - I am starting the beginning phase of starting a podcast...more on this later

All in all with YouTube and the branches of income that come from YouTube (Adsense, Affiliates, Course Sales, sponsorships..e.tc) The channel brings in about $15k-$20k per month, which is quite honestly more than I could have ever imagined. This, plus my other revenue streams (consulting & car sharing) I should pass $30k for the month of March which is crazy.

Can't thank this community enough for the support over the years, if it wasn't for this forum and the mindset that comes along with it, I wouldn't be where I am today.

The last couple weeks have been insane growth-wise, I have been sticking to a formula that works - all my recent videos have been around the same topic, I use similar thumbnails and similar titles (each video over a different subtopic within that topic) and the results have been huge.

33123

Yesterday I passed the 1K sub milestone and I should be monetized by the end of the week - I am 100 hours away from the 4k watch hour requirement set by Youtube for monetization, which I will pass by the end of the day today.

Current Subs: 1,206

It has been far too long since I have made an update - so the last 6 months have been really great.

I am still doing Youtube and now have a subscriber base of just under 35k subscribers, my channel has gotten just about 2 million views this year and over the last few months, I have started posting daily videos.

Currently, I have a few brand deals and have a few really exciting opportunities in the works that really were only possible from this YouTube channel.

As of now, I am focusing on how to grow this even more in 2021 and how to spin this off into multiple revenue streams. Here are my updated analytics below:

With brand deals and sponsorships I should hit just about $40k in total revenue for 2020.

Wow, I appreciate all the kind words! I have certainly been trying to figure out what sticks (and also what I enjoy doing) over the last 10+ years.

I LOVE this forum, and it is one of the only places on the internet where I have documented rather consistently the trials and errors of my career - I joined this forum when I was 20, I just recently turned 28 and I think it's really easy to look at what you are doing now and forget about how much you tried that failed (in my case many of which has been documented on this forum).

- I tried to create an app and failed (there is a thread somewhere about that)
- I opened a franchise and it was one of the hardest things I ever did but also one of the biggest lessons (there is also a thread somewhere on this as well)
- I tried to create an online community around franchising and failed
...the list truly goes on and on and on.

I guess what I am trying to get at is there are a lot of teens and people in their early 20's in this community and it feels like just yesterday I was also a part of that group (crazy to think I am nearing 30) but the important part of this journey is to just keep trying. If you fail, evaluate why you failed, pivot, adjust and then get back at it.

Consistently showing up for yourself in whatever you are wanting to accomplish is THE MOST IMPORTANT part of success. Also execution - far too many people talk about what they are wanting to accomplish without actually doing anything - action faking will be the demise of your success.

I guess while I am here I can give a brief update since it has been a few months since my last one.

Life has been really good - I have been really in hustle mode the last 2 years trying to build my streams of income and the work is paying off - here is sort of the highlight reel

- My fiance and partner of 7 years quit his job over the Summer to help me with the business full time, he has since taken over the rental/peer-to-peer sharing part of the business - We have 17 vehicles spread across multiple platforms.
- My YouTube channel is currently sitting at 73k subs - I switched up my content over the summer and also changed the frequency in which I post (went from 7 days per week to 3 days per week) and I saw a pretty significant hit in performance with this change, but that was to be expected. I since have found my stride and the channel stats are ticking back up again. I wanted to hit 100k subs by the end of the year, I doubt that will happen but that's okay, I am happy with the progress.
- I started a second channel with my fiance - this channel is a vlog channel, it has been going well.
- My online courses are doing far better than I expected, the goal was to make $10k from these in 2021, and I will pass $50k in revenue for these - an income source that is almost entirely passive.

I am averaging about $25k-$30k in month across all my revenue streams.

If anyone has any questions about YouTube or how to get started I would love to help answer any questions - I have not been doing a good job about checking in on this thread but will try to pop in once a week at least.

So, here is my growth over the last 3 months

January 2020:

32110

February 2020:
32111

March 2020:
32112

In March I went from posting 2 times a week and experimented with posting 3 times - I did not see the gain I was hoping for with going from 2 posts (Tuesday and Thursday) to 3 posts (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) per week - but I decided after March to stick with the 3 times per week structure anyways.

My plan this week is I hired someone on Fiverr to make me a new cover photo for the channel and I also have a collaboration video with a YouTuber with just under 600 subs going out on Friday - so I am hoping that leads to an increase in subs on my channel.

Been about a month since my last update - and it's been an eventful month! I had a video hit 250k views which really helped my growth. My growth graph from the last 28 days is below:
33978
Total Subs: 10,664
Total Revenue: $5,028.67

Subs and revenue has been cool to see the last couple of days, just yesterday the channel made $750 and gained over 1,000 subscribers. Though at this point I am not really concentrating on the revenue side (it's just the icing on the cake)

I am really brainstorming projects and ways I can
1) Create passive income for the channel other than Google Adsense
2) Create videos that are more unique than other business and finance channels

As of right now, all my videos are "talking head" style videos where I sit at a desk and give advice, I am thinking of changing that up and maybe try to do daily videos (and at least experiment with them) and teach people about business, finance and starting a business while taking them through my daily life of growing a business in my mid-20's (sort of like a daily vlog). I think it would be a cool idea to show growing a business in real-time in your 20s, because so often youtube entrepreneurs document their journey AFTER finding extreme success, not during the process of it.

I have tons of ideas I am sifting through and wanting to execute on - the traction I've been experiencing the last month has been really due to creating videos on a trending topic (stimulus packages) so, I am a bit nervous on how my audience is going to translate to normal business and finance videos.

But I am pumped with the progress so far! My goal was to hit 1k by the end of the year, and to be at 10k by July is something I am happy about - my new goal for the end of the year is to hit 20k subs

My tip to you and I know this from experience, keep your channel on the positive side. Just watched Lessons Learned from FAILING TURO Rental Car Business | Host Reaction. Great video, lots of very valid points but do yourself a HUGE favor and avoid calling people stupid or dumb on your videos (in fact avoid it in life in general) but especially on YouTube as YouTube frowns on this and it will probably not help your video to rank. It also reflects badly on your character.
Keep it positive.
In the future point out his errors thinking and and his statements by just being factual and logical (which you were) without being derogatory to the man personally. Your audience will appreciate your valid input and will make up their own minds on his statements and opinions. For instance your statement on ROI was very valid. He actually has no way of knowing what the ROI on vehicle on Turo. Very valid point along with many others. Keep up the good work. My channel Richard Lloyd

The count on this is a bit delayed and hasn't accounted for the subs I've gained the last week

Also, try to get the viewers more involved so they leave a comment. After the first couple of minutes, ask a question.... since you talk a lot about Turo, maybe something like... what do you think the 1st car listed on Turo was? Mix in a few quirky car questions and facts in every video. Do this in every video so people get used to it. Do it quick so it doesn't take up but a few seconds and also quickly give the answer to last video's question. Just a thought to get the viewers a little more involved.

The last couple weeks have been really good - got monetized a few days after my last post, and so far have made just over $600-- Money isn't really a big concern for me right now, but it's still cool to see some progress on that front.

As of now, I am averaging about 3500 views per day on the channel with some days being as high as 7k - Current Sub Count: 2,604

I plan to use any money that comes into the channel into improving equipment, the filming set up...etc.

I also have a really cool partnership in the works - I have an idea for a series on the channel I am really pumped about, and I approached a company about a potential collaboration and they loved the idea - I have a meeting with their marketing team next week. So more on that front later!

That's so awesome! Huge congratulations.

@MJ DeMarco, time for that GOLD tag. So deserved for Aubrey's incredible progress.

Aubrey, in your video How I Make $20,000 Per Month at 27 Years Old it's very easy to see how comfortable you are filming yourself and talking in front of the camera. That's a great skill in itself. Excellent execution. It's very inspiring.

Thanks for sharing your progress. So I'm guessing the fiance is a believer in entrepreneurship? Or was he was just come by way of your backdraft?
He is EXTREMELY supportive of me but is definitely not an entrepreneurial-minded person. If he was single he would work a 9-5 job for the rest of his life and be okay with it (which is fine, he has never been that entrepreneurial type of guy). So our dynamic has worked really nicely as he lets me drive the ship and he provides value wherever he needs to or fills that gaps I can't fill.

For example, he is extremely good with cars, so he's taking over the car-sharing business has been a natural transition.

So a weekly update/check-in here, progress this week has been slow - I try not to pay TOO much attention to metrics as it sometimes tends to lead to frustration, but here is what happened this past week:

The Bad:
I had a series on the channel where I basically reacted to videos made by other creators who started a Turo business, experiment with Turo...etc. these are people that made videos talking about their experience with Turo - So, I had a series where I went through, reacted to these videos, critiqued what they did and gave insight on what they could improve on. One of my best videos was one of these - well last week the guy I reacted to reached out to me and told me I needed to take it down, he compared it to theft and said he would copyright strike my channel if I didn't take it down.

So, I took it down - I will probably recreate it in some fashion but haven't done so yet. Lesson learned, and I will probably change the way I approach these reaction videos in the future, but it was a bummer for sure. I do not believe I was "stealing" from this guy, but I also didn't want trouble or any issues down the road.

The Good:
A big topic of my channel so far is Turo, how to grow a Turo fleet, how to be successful on the platform...etc.

So, I reached out to the Turo CEO a few days ago giving him my story, telling him my experience with the platform and told him I wanted to partner up with Turo to do a mutually beneficial partnership - surprisingly, he responded! I had a really good email conversation with him and today I had a call with a marketing rep for the company and next week I have a meeting with the head of marketing.

I am not sure what our joint effort will look like - but in today's climate they are looking for hosts to be their advocate and I am looking for a platform to promote my channel on, so there is something in the works there and I am very excited about it!

The last week has been a good week on the channel - last Friday I created a video talking about the EIDL program and it blew up (in comparison to my other videos) and got 1,000 views in the first 24 hours.

So a few days later I created a different video on a similar topic and that one got just under 1,000 views in 24 hours.

Third video published on Wednesday of this week did 3500 views in the first 24 hours - currently sitting at nearly 5,000 views

So, this past week I have gained 148 subscribers, 531 watch hours and 8.2K views - so I am super pumped about it and trying to really leverage the increase in views

I have tons of ideas I am sifting through and wanting to execute on - the traction I've been experiencing the last month has been really due to creating videos on a trending topic (stimulus packages) so, I am a bit nervous on how my audience is going to translate to normal business and finance videos.

I can see from your channel that your highest viewcount content is all surrounding this EIDL Grant. Instead of hopping to something random in business/finance, why not dig a little deeper here?

The people that are chasing this content, what else are they looking for? What other questions could they be asking themselves? You have a video with 288k views - I think that's a lot of potential feedback to work with. Can you dig thru the comments and see if you pick up any patterns?

Not saying you necessarily chase EIDL or other trendy things as an overall strategy, but if you're beginning to get traction (I think 288k views is great - you hit something with the YT algorithm there), you could potentially have more content that triggers that algorithm to put your face out.

Once you have a stronger following, subscribers, notifications, wtv, you can leverage that reach for your other ideas. Might be some gold here you're not seeing, but what do I know, I'm no YT expert. Just speculating.

@AubreyJ nicely done! Keep it up, you are a true entrepreneur. It is such a pleasure reading your story, I visited your YouTube channel too and you come off as humble, trustworthy and just a pleasure to listen to.

Wishing you massive success in Real Estate!

Thank you! I appreciate the kind words!

@AubreyJ - are you still writing as a major focus, or is that in the past? Hobby?

@MJ DeMarco No, not a ton, unfortunately. I am not a particularly strong writer, so it is something I am doing to get better at as a craft, but not a main focus as far as revenue streams go.

I can't say for 100% just because I am not the one reporting the numbers, but I follow a number of creators who have shared their numbers and it seems to be pretty accurate - a creator Andrei Jeikh has stated he has made up to $100k in a single month, others like MeetKevin who are smaller have reported $20-$50k per month, and then Graham Stephan who is one of the largest I know of is pulling in $100k+ per month consistently.

So it seems as though across the board the numbers are pretty consistent

The last week has been a good week on the channel - last Friday I created a video talking about the EIDL program and it blew up (in comparison to my other videos) and got 1,000 views in the first 24 hours.

So a few days later I created a different video on a similar topic and that one got just under 1,000 views in 24 hours.

Third video published on Wednesday of this week did 3500 views in the first 24 hours - currently sitting at nearly 5,000 views

So, this past week I have gained 148 subscribers, 531 watch hours and 8.2K views - so I am super pumped about it and trying to really leverage the increase in views

Current Sub Count: 385 Subs

Those are solid numbers! Nice work.

Check out this channel (you might know it already): Nate O'Brien

He is in the same niche and had/has massive channel growth.

He has a video where he shows YT income and its like 250k a year (probably way higher now). Then add in on top his own income streams from the audience etc.

The niche you are in is a great one with lots of people searching all the time - you should do really well.

Best of luck!

Super solid work, @AubreyJ. I respect putting out content so consistently.

My YouTube channel was recently randomly banned for an unknown reason ("community guidelines"). They rejected my appeal and the channel is forever gone (a few years old, roughly 30-40k subscribers, making at most $100/month from ads). I didn't post anything on it for many months and never uploaded any controversial content so it was really random.

What is your plan to protect yourself against a similar scenario?

It seems to me that YouTube is very erratic and happy to ban people for no reason. I wouldn't be comfortable building a business on such a platform.

Wow, that is very interesting. I have heard of similar things happening but never under this sort of circumstance.

My goal is to be able to create a revenue stream that is in connection to YouTube but not solely on YouTube (Of course YouTube revenue is a bonus), So ultimately I would like to be active across several platforms including YouTube, Patreon, and more.

But, this is certainly a fear of mine. I have been actively trying to solidify myself as a "safe" YouTube figure (this was at the advice of a fairly large finance YouTuber)- I want to build a reputation of being transparent, honest, and trustworthy and I hope that sort of reputation (if I ever get big enough to have a reputation) would help.

But other than that to be honest I don't know if there is a whole lot I could do. It certainly is something I have thought about, but not something I have a ton of concerns about. I think the risk vs. reward in this situation is worth proceeding even if the potential of getting banned is there.

Oh wow! @MTF What kind of channel was it?

This is the same scenario I had when I was building affiliate sites with Amazon several years ago. I had been building niche sites and they pulled the affiliate program from our state. Boom, money gone. And of course, I'm sitting here now with the same situation, but a different part of Amazon. I know better but I haven't figured out yet how I want to expand into something that is profitable at my age.

you are a true entrepreneur.
Isn't she just?

During my usual forum detective work I read all her threads.

Wow, what a diverse journey, stock market, app, real estate, F&B, franchise, fleet hire, YouTube.

She just gets on with it, no action faking, no ask the audience.

Even more impressive is she's doing this in fields not usually associated with women. (Sorry feminists)

She's a 21st century Margaret Thatcher.

And yes, I do think she could be the first woman President.

In a country where peanut farmers, cowboys, wrestlers and cybernetic organisms from the future can hold political office, anything's possible.

Which is quite frightening because that means even Kak could be president.

PS Aubrey your thread and YouTube channel has given me some inspiration for a venture I'm currently working on.

Thank you.

This is an awesome thread and update. Was awesome to see you grow at such a rapid pace.

Something that would be hugely beneficial for me and others to see in this thread is --

Can you clarify what you have been doing for your online courses? How do you market them - and what do you offer? How do you find customers for your courses, is it purely through your youtube channel or do you have other ways you have been promoting them? What all went into creating the courses and how fast were you able to put those together?

Perhaps this is all detailed in one of your videos.

It sounds like they (the courses you offer) have exceeded any and all of your expectations of how well they did, and it'd be great (if you can and willing to do so) - to share the knowledge of what worked and did not work for you in that facet of business.

Great job!!!

Thank you for the feedback! I totally agree with you, I think it's important to stay positive - I will make a more conscious effort to not to be so critical but more so constructive in future videos...I think sometimes (in personal life as well as on camera) I can come off a bit harsher than I intend to so I will definitely make a note of this going forward.

I just subbed to your channel as well - I am excited to check out some of your videos!

Rental car industry being slammed due to corona. How is Turo being affected?

Maybe a video on how the space is changing due to the current market conditions?

Thanks for starting this thread! Congrats on the growth and you've inspired me to continue seeking out what kind of channel I want to make. ;) Looking forward to seeing the stats/income between now and the end of the year.
