I just spoke to a friend who owns a pizza shop. Definitely a PRODUCTOCRACY. It's a franchise but people love his shop in particular. So much so that the other 2 franchises in my area closed down and he's opening another shop.

For the last WEEK he has been closing THREE HOURS EARLY EVERY DAY because he sells out of stock. I asked him why he doesn't figure out a way to stay open and he said "I'm not greedy"

It was interesting to note because I wasn't thinking in terms of greed. I was thinking about all the people who really wanted he serves but were missing out on it.

I've been trying to think about what I could do to bridge that gap.

If anybody wants to make a killing - open a pizza shop.

Anybody have any stories of BOOMING businesses right now?

I heard bread-making machines are selling like hotcakes. Some store were running out of bread so bread-machines experiences like a 600% increase.

Found this neat chart today. Good starting point to get ideas for picking up on what's trending right now, and will possibly be hot for the rest of the lockdown (and beyond!).

Alcohol:

Of course, alcohol sales are also up, according to market research firm Nielsen. Alcoholic beverage sales were up 55% during the week that ended March 21 compared with the same week the prior year, led by spirits, with sales jumping 75%. Wine sales rose 66% and sales of beer, including cider, were up 42%, according to Neilsen.

Stores are running out of flour but there's ample bread on the shelves
Probably reacting to news that Asian countries won't be exporting
People panic bought pasta & rice, now it's flour's turn
I predict oats will be next
At least in the UK anyway

What I'm interested to know is, why are those other pizza shops closing while his biz is booming?

Is it because of factors like price? Branding? Customer service? Pizza menu variation? Or just better pizza taste? Ambience? Social proof due to some celeb eating there previously? Low overheads and high margins?
Maybe the bosses of those 2 pizzas shops that closed down, were just in it to make quick bucks and weren't serious about it?

I didn’t explain properly.
The other shops closed down before the pandemic like a year ago. I just mentioned that to describe the productocracy he has.

It’s probably a combination of all the above. The food is amazing. The service is great. The brand is strong. The location is prime. They have a great reputation and history.

Their website is meh. He does zero advertising. The dine-in is atmosphere is nothing special (not that that matters right now). He doesn’t even serve alcohol.

Good questions though. I wanted to start this thread to detail SPECIFIC businesses not just types of businesses or industries that are booming.

Because your right, I’m sure not every pizza shop is closing down 3 hours early every day... but my friend’s is.

Thanks for sharing this.

These weird and unfortunate times we are living in, teach us a lot about economics in general, both macro and micro.
