Cool invention, but I would want no part of that. The regulatory labyrinth alone is enough to discourage me. Not to mention the potential for lawsuits.

As far as the moral of the story: love it. Being an outsider often brings a different perspective that can be leveraged for novel insights and solutions.

Perhaps you could find a medical device manufacturer to license it to. Royalties for life?

This is a phenomenon that fascinates me. When outsiders come in and disrupt.

I have no experience in my industry, I just jumped into it. Every competitor grew up in the industry, and does things "by the book". There are so many opportunities to do things differently, and that's a big advantage for me. The biggest disadvantage is that I lack a lot of the intricate product knowledge the other guys have... but I'm doing my best to hire or contract that knowledge and skill into the company.

I totally agree. While being in the industry has its advantages (know about the problems that plague the industry), I also feel like a certain amount of outside-the-box thinking is lost. Your no longer able to see the problems differently as a newcomer might.

I think its a valuable thought-process that maybe only a few people have. Or only a few cultivate. It's very interesting.

It was a simple solution to a complex problem. I'd like to think that his distance from the medical field allowed him to see the solution a different way, than say a doctor might.
