i'm thinking of how society will change due to all this... knowing that can help you plan businesses around that

i think some of the changes will be:

people working from home, people more conscious of germs, potential dismantling of the chinese communist regime, calculating the risk for various pandemics/catastrophes, greater trust in experts, more delivery services, closing of commercial real estate
Lots of Commercial Real Estate here in KC has already been converted to condos and apartments. I think some more spacious loft/apartments with ways to isolate yourself to work and also ways to work and be with/watch the family.

Personal gyms? Gyms were somewhat skeevy even before the disease.

We still want/need to congregate. More of the luxury suite concept? Dress up in Burqas?

Super secure comms. Maybe space age phone booths?

Probably been said before but what is desperately needed is a contact tracing app with absolute privacy. I have zero understanding of fancy words like blockchain but I'm pretty sure there must be some new tech out there that could solve the trust issues.

if you could innovate replacements for any of these high-touch surfaces it would be a goldmine.

With C0VlD-19 now spreading in the U.S., you’ve probably heard recommendations to wash your hands after contact with what are called high-touch surfaces: elevator buttons, public faucets, handrails, doorknobs, shopping carts, ATM screens, gas pumps, checkout keypads, and many more otherwise mundane objects we encounter throughout the day.

I've thought about this too. Maybe a spray/wipe on anti viral/bacterial compound that could be applied to handles, railings, buttons, etc.

Copper and silver naturally have anti viral/bacterial properties.

Of course I would only sell the product. Not going to go around wiping 1,000s of touchpoints for customers lol

Interesting find:

It will be interesting to see how Netflix and other on demand type services fare, since I imagine they won't be filming anything new? As opposed to say Youtube that will be getting non stop content creation from it's users through out this shutdown.

Why would I pay for information that I can get online for free? I found this within seconds.

I don't want to come of as a naysayer, I just don't see the value.
Why do people pay for courses online when that info is readily available for free by searching? Why do people get music lessons in person from teachers when they can watch YouTube tutorials for free?

The fact is most people need their hand held and a kick in the a$$ to get their household prepared for emergency situations. At least that is my thought here...

So who's actually been able to make money in new ways since the beginning of this? I posted this thread a little bit back and there are a bunch of ideas.... has anyone tried any new ideas?

My main business hasn't really changed much.

I've had more time to try a few new ventures... but what have you guys been up to?

I made more money in my original business originally as it just so happened to have benefited from covid. Good old control commandment gave me a bite in the a$$, and one simple change of terms cut my profits by more than half.

The commandment of control is no joke.

I have worked on a couple of other things but not gotten any traction.

Currently working on my next thing.

most handle it themselves, big ones have a ton of employees so they can just let them clean with better means what they're already cleaning, small ones don't have enough money to outsource the cleaning.

At least this is what happens in the 5/6 gyms in my area.

Offices if the cleaning companies that are already working there don't guarantee the anti-virus cleaning maybe there's a niche
Is there an anti-viral certification? Could some one create one?
Certified by the Fastlane Antiviral Police to be 99.9% virus free on all hard surfaces.

@Kak since everyone is working from home – maybe some type of cloud-based computing system that allows you to access your work computer from anywhere? Jeez, somebody really should invent that!!

Amazon workspaces does exactly that. You login through an app and you are inside your Windows computer running in the cloud.

now, teaching companies how to use this mechanism to save on hardware costs and let people working from their own computers at home can be an interesting tech consulting field.

Is this a way I can hire a beefier virtual machine to process videos?

My PC is good enough for some hardcore Excel, and some light video editing. I don’t want to spend money on more hardware if I want to process videos faster. How do I access better computing power?

That would have been an automatic no nswer not too long ago mainly due to lag from the storage to the person editing. I also would not run SQL server on a virtual platform until 5 or 6 years ago.

Now there have been improvements all along the way.
Here are a few options from 2018:

I personally run CyberLink PowerDirector 365. It's pretty powerful and it runs locally, but it does not use the resources something like Adobe Premier.

I suspect Adobe has an online option that reduces local hardware needs, too.

Folks, I want to give you another idea. We need to reinvent the desk chairs for remote workers such as developers. Those ergonomic chairs are expensive and not very comfortable. I was thinking about an comfortable armchair with some sort of computer table attached to it. In this way you can stay in a comfortable position between a bed and a sofa and still focused on your work. I am a remote tech manager, I have a ergonomic chair but I feel most focused and productive when laying on the couch with my Mac on the legs. Think about it..
Bean-bags with monitor and keyboard mounts? Hmmm... I think it could catch on.

Great thread.
Been thinking all about this. Specifically about the elderly/senior market quite a bit.

This might help a couple people get on the right track: " Who Are You Helping?"

Virtual Reality.

Yes! Valve (the video game company) just released a VR title, and I know that thousands of people have bought a VR headset for it. Those people had the money for a VR headset, and they definitely want to make use of it. Same goes for the other thousands of people who already owned one.

It doesn't have to be videogame related, although I personally think that's the easiest market to get into for VR.

I get so distracted and caught up in thinking of ideas that I end up action-faking... or not doing anything at all. I should probably just finish this digital marketing course and go from there.

I get ahead of myself trying to figure out a way to help people sooner rather later but I don’t really have any skills. Go figure! An economics degree and 2 years working at a clothing store and I feel absolutely useless.
This might help:

The impact of this event is about to put some big demands on the mental health space. I, myself, am starting to feel the effects of this. I am already mentally exhausted.

I've worked from home for a long time, and it's getting to me too. Not that a lot has changed in my daily routine. However, knowing that I don't have a choice now is a strange feeling.

What about a office package combination deal? Desk, laptop computer, wireless mouse, wireless keyboard, printer/scanner/fax, chair, bamboo plant (just kidding about the plant) all rolled into one package and one price.

How about a butler or room service app? You type in the app what you need and how soon and someone brings you the item. Can pay through the app.
I was thinking of a personal shopper. You being careful following all the rules go to Costco for Granny Smith. Put the packages in the garage spray some Lysol, Grandma comes out sprays more Lysol, pick up bags in a safe manner and reduces her risk quite a bit.

Where I live, people have been doing this for free. It is one of the good things that's coming out of this, is we are all looking out for each other a lot more.
Likewise. In the small town of 4k there's been 50 volunteers to help do the shopping for vulnerable residents.

I suspect if someone enterprising was to do this for free then people may want to tip them too?

My mum lives in a nice rented apartment but can't close her washing machine. The door is too stiff and I can't even close it by hand myself - I have to push it shut with my knee.

Because of that she's been getting her weekly cleaner to take away her clothes, clean them, and bring them back. Her cleaner can't come in and clean but will be round this morning to drop off a bag of clean clothes and pick up a back of dirty clothes.

How many other people struggle to get their clothes cleaned?

My mum will also struggle to change her bed linen. I'm not sure how we'll address that just yet...

My wife works for a building materials business. They're flat out. So many people at home are doing projects in the garden.

I know I'm going to clear the shed and side-alley and will be hiring a small skip soon.

I've carpets going into a rental property at the weekend. The carpet fitter says work has dried up, but he's not advertising and relies on word-of-mouth. Maybe there's an uptick in carpet fitting too? Maybe not as it will involve someone going into your house.

Addiction will soon be an issue. So many people stressed out because of the outbreak or because they can't work and are dealing with it by drinking, smoking, porn and taking drugs. Just look at the US news for the number of booze deliveries companies are making. Going back to the workforce when this is all over will impact a lot of us and some might not be ready to go back to "normal living".

How are we going to help the guy that starts drinking at 10 AM because he has nothing better to do?

Glad to see this thread come up. Breath of fresh air.

While it's important to be aware of the science and danger of the virus from the main C0VlD-19 thread, I think it's equally important to maintain a positive mindset through this.

There's sure to be a ton of opportunities that we can take advantage of during these unprecedented times.

Get started today because others are...... what have many people been doing during this time TOGETHER at home? Making babies. Think ahead, this could be your opportunity. Baby showers, baby gifts, health of mom & baby, baby product reviews and so many other things. Even weddings will come from the makings of babies. If I were to start an online business, I might go one of these routes. Let us know if you do and if you do, let us know how it goes for you.

Just think of how many babies were made during the typing of this message..... and then again, just think of how many were.... well, we won't go there..... :wideyed: ;)
Like the baby boomers generation post-war 1945?!

I just had a Facebook messenger chat with my mums cleaner. (Isn’t that amazing in itself? Messaging someone in another country via a device in my hand...)

Anyway, the cleaner's been in for 20 mins to change my mum's bed covers, unblock the shower plug hole (it can get dangerously slippy otherwise), and do a quick vacuum. My mum was in another room. The cleaner wore gloves and disinfected surfaces as she went. Granted she didn’t wear a mask because it’s not the culture in the UK to wear masks (yet?).

I’m wondering how many old or vulnerable people who are self-isolated / cacooned will need a quick visit by a professional cleaner to keep their home safe and clean?

Correction, you have to have SEED capital to pay for a domain name, web hosting, autoresponder and a link tracking service at least. True, you can help someone but only if you are skilled, most beginners are not skilled enough to do that in the beginning. That is the problem. But, they need to be told that there is no push button, do no work thing that will make them millionaires. That is the lie being perpetuated. It takes work, skill, and effort just like in the real world!
That sounds like a limiting belief.

I’m not getting into this. These might help:
