Can all active duty and veteran military personnel come to this thread and make yourself known.

As many people on this forum know, I am a combat veteran who served on active duty and did one tour in Iraq.

I have now been out of the military for many years, but have still been able to use many programs, resources, and benefits courtesy of good old Uncle Sam due to my time in service.

I have been able to solve almost any problem that I have faced in life since transitioning back to being a civilian due to my strong network of military contacts.

There are hundreds of programs and resources available to veterans. I would like to have this thread be a place on the forum where veterans can come to ask for or provide information, contacts, and resources that are geared specifically toward veterans.

Military people are more prone to becoming entrepreneurs, and fill most of the senior and upper level positions in corporate jobs. There is not a niche or industry out providing value and making money that does not have a soldier working in some capacity at that company or organization. This equals ENDLESS opportunities to network and gain access to things you need to succeed on your journey.

I think that if we pool our resources in one place we can create more opportunities and chances to help each other while on our Fastlane journey, we will know immediately the first place to come and look for help with a problem we have that may be able to be solved with a veteran specific resource.

As for me- I am still astounded by the fact that there are still soldiers who don't know about the Post 9/11 education grant.

But honestly, I didn't know about it either, until I was out one day running errands with my Army PT shirt on and a veteran approached me and we started talking about it all. Since getting that information the Post 9/11 grant has been the BIGGEST assistance with me being able to fully pursue my Fastlane ideas. That income has given me the opportunity to not be so pressed about working a 9/5.

For those who don't know, with the P/911 grant you can trade in your traditional Montgomery GI Bill education grant for this one, which does the same as the MGIB as far as paying for all of your educational classes, etc., but it also comes with a monthly housing allowance stipend, just like BAH when you were in the military. The allowance is paid at the E-5 with dependent rate for your state. (You must be a full time student to get the maximum rate, otherwise they pay you according to how many hours you are enrolled.

This is just one example of MANY that can be used to help a veteran.

Do you know that there are also special military/veteran designations that you can register your (Veteran) owned small business under that gives you access government contracts, financial assistance, and other beneficial things.

I think this thread has a lot of potential to be really helpful to veterans in particular, so I hope that you all post in here.

Mine is embarrassing, I didn't go to the VA until over 20 years after retirement. I didn't want to add to the burden. I thought that the care would be crap. I was wrong. I got 10% of my retirement shifted to disability. They took part of it away from my ex-wife (F*ck yeah). I got some kick-a$$ hearing aids and a great CPAP machine. And, a good back up to my civilian doctor.

@jon.a I didn't look into any military stuff either when I first got out of the Army. I was so happy to be back home and just get a DECENT JOB! SMH! Years later I just started looking up stuff that was specifically for veterans to volunteer at (with the idea to network) was how I initially started getting exposed to everything. I was BLOWN away by all of the stuff out there.

This is my first line of defense and first point of contact for everything. They have the answers and help to EVERYTHING.

One more thing. I didn't retire, but I get the VA ID card to go to all of the military hospitals... They have new dental insurance too which started in January 2014, with Delta dental- I have the $35 a month plan. I go to one of the best, most expensive dental offices in downtown Chicago!
I am also able to get free prescription medication, and anything else I need medically- check ups, exams, tests, etc. all for free.

Prior to getting so involved with the veteran network, I thought this was only for people who did 20 and retired.

There are personal and professional resources. We earned them, we are entitled to them, and further, they are there for us to use. So if you know of anything, or have a question about anything please continue to post.

I know quite a few people who run a lot of different programs for veterans here in Chicago. There is a lot for entrepreneurs specifically too.

Here's one for those still active, CLEP exams...
http://clep.collegeboard.org/exam

I took at lot of them, they used to be free for active duty. Between them and service schools I was half way to a business degree when I started school. It only took me 18 month with over loading to graduate.

Veteran U.S. Navy Enlisted here. I'm interested in getting into government contracting. Problem is that I'm overseas and I think it's difficult to take advantage of a lot of the benefits afforded to veteran business owners while abroad. If you know anything that I don't please share. If I find something out I'll try do the same here.

What have been the business-related programs you've used most?

Retired US Air Force. I know a lot of you guys are enlisted, but for any officers out there I found a great program. You can be a CAT 'E' Reservist in the Air Force and become an 'Admissions Liaison Officer' for the US Air Force Academy. Although you don't get paid for it, you can get a good year in points towards retirement by only working a minimum of 140 hours a year. All you do basically is interview kids in local high schools who want to go to USAFA. You don't have to be a graduate. The Army and Navy have similar programs for West Point and Annapolis, but I don't know the details. When I got out of active duty, Guard and Reserve, I did this gig part time for about 8 years. Now I have picked up a full military retirement, starting at Age 60 (Reserve retirement). Still quite a few years away and it's not exactly being a millionaire, but it sure don't hurt.

No Marines representing yet?
I'll be the first Devil Dog to do so. Former Assaultman (0351), 2001-2005.

I definitely recommend every vet take advantage of Post 9/11 GI Bill and of course the VA home loan guarantee.
Also the SBA has (or atleast had?) the patriot loan for vets. I think SCORE has some special vet programs too.
