Are Shopify Presales A Good Idea?

Just a quick one here, I've seen a couple of people say that they have deliberately sold stock they know they don't have on Shopify, in order to test the market.

I should have some product landing in the next couple of weeks, and I'm considering doing this, just so that I can gauge how quickly the units will sell.

However I wanted to garner opinion on this. Speaking from a consumer point of view, this sort of thing annoys me, however I don't want to rule it out just because of personal feelings.

I have never successfully pre-sold anything on Shopify. People generally want immediate gratification. Nobody but you cares about the fact that your stock is not here yet.

If you're selling new videogames, an iPhone or something like that, then yes pre-sales definitely work.
If it's just generic things from China, then I don't think pre-sales will work (at least not for me, a consumer).

Prove me wrong though. Could work if you attack it from the right angle.

I don't think I'll be proving you wrong anytime soon. Like you said, a video game or big brand product, or even some kind of new innovative product might work.

I'll just be patient and wait till it lands.
