AndyTalks with Colum about Vlogging, Content Creation, & Choosing a Direction

Colum has a job in a company helping to implement inbound lead generation strategies. He's a consultant and helped over 300 businesses use the platform. He had a decision to make in this job and wanted a chat.

We chatted for 80 minutes and covered things like:
  • How I'm using Snapchat to vlog and get into a daily rhythm.
  • Why "Video First".
  • How you move forward by (ahem) moving forward and not by going back.
  • Using a coin flip to make big decisions.
  • Don't get too hung up deciding... make a decision knowing all roads lead to Rome.
  • "Give yourself permission to suck" (I got this from a "Doberman Dan" podcast).
  • Other stuff I can't remember.

As usual, it's raw as I've not edited it.

It's 80 minutes, and if I was to get it transcribed on www.rev.com then it would cost me $80.

If you do listen to it and get something from it, then please add your comments below. It will help others decide whether to listen to it or not, and it will help me to add some show-notes in this first post.

What were your takeaways?

How to find the right people?

Pick a direction and start.

Adjust on the way.

When you are actively going somewhere, you attract the right people.

Don't worry about being perfect, but give yourself the permission to suck (damn, this is a good one!).

How to progress?

Don't get caught up in perfectionism.

Always keep moving, no matter what.

Don't go back, don't wait, just move on. Didn't add transcription to your video? Add it to the next.

Week by week, you improve little things, you develop a process, you add things, you remove things, you refine.

You create your own blueprints.

How to position yourself?

How many people know the same things you know?

How many people of those are confident talking about it on video?

How many people of those actually do it?

How many people of those feel comfortable doing it live?

If you start out, you don't have to be the best. You just need to be better than businesses so they hire you to do it for them.

How to network?

You don't need to meet people in person, although that helps.

Look around you. There is money floating around. Every car, every building, every business - people make and spend money every day.

There are enough people and enough businesses to keep you busy for the next years in YOUR very own city.

There is enough money floating around within a 2 mile radius.

Build your funnel and attach yourself to it.

The best way to network with business owners? Be a consultant and help them grow their business!

Find people who see the value in what you do and not the cost.

A complete done for you service will always be perceived of a higher value than the rest.

How to focus?

Stay in your lane.

Don't try to do everything you can.

Businesses owners who cannot afford consultants want to learn everything themselves, do everything themselves.

This is why their businesses don't grow.

When speaking in public, only you know your script.

Be a producer, not a consumer. Produce from what you consume.

Thank you for sharing, EXTREMELY VALUABLE lessons learned.

Great insights @Nicoknowsbest

Thanks for sharing.

You missed an important bit about all roads leading to Rome. ;)

Don't get too precious about making decisions. Do your research and due diligence. Go for a walk. Sleep on it. Then flip a coin. Your gut will tell you what your head can't.

Also... you'll adjust back towards your path anyway if you stray too far (if you're the type of person who observes and takes action that is!).

I knew I forgot something!

Very true.

I'd like to give myself permission to suck from now on.

100% agreed.

Again, thank you for the rep!!
