Dear Fastlaners,

I am currently working on my USP for my business. So far I only have one product which is a book about Communication in Nature. The book was initiated by an agency for authors who found my PhD topic (rabbits in the city) interesting. I therefore wrote that book without any "selling purpose" in mind but only because I knew a lot about the topic and I enjoyed the writing. Now I am self-employed as a scientist and want to get on the Fastlane with my business. I know now that many people out there wants to learn more about science and nature as there is a need of reconnection to nature. In my opinion and as I heard already from people who red my book the benefit of my book is, that I wrote it in an understandable way, that I explain science funny and that my book is easy to read. People saw the world differently after reading it and felt more connected to nature. My strength seems to be to put many information into a greater picture and show where we as humans fit it. I also realised that there are many people out there who talk about scientific publications but not understand the whole story and sometimes even providing wrong information. So one of my benefits is, that I get all my information from the publications itself and because of my scientific background I do see if a publication is done well and the information reliable or not.

My question is what kind of an USP I can create for my business. Basically, I am a translator between the scientific world and the public. Something like "Science for your life" or "Feel more connected with nature - or you get your money back" I am happy for any recommendations.

Thanks,
Madlen

Hello Madlen

I'm not sure you need to worry about a USP so much. You just need to be you which by default is unique. What is the USP of David Attenborough? Or Brian Cox?

They are just good at talking to people in language that is simple to understand and making a great story out of their specialist subject.

Perhaps it is being British but the moment I read the word rabbit, Peter Rabbit came to mind. :)

Beatrix Potter was a natural scientist, artistic and 36 when she wrote the book. Not so different from...You!

Could you make your science accessible to children via books?

Reading some of your blurb about the book is more interesting than the title of the book. Children and adults like fun facts like that. Plus you finally exonerate Prince Charles (talking to tomato's)

You could probably re-jig that book in my opinion.

Hey Dan,

thanks for your answer. I am thinking about children's book versions out of my existing book. My initial idea was a children's book about a town and a land rabbit that talk about their different life styles based on my research :) Because of this idea I went to a science slam and was then "discovered" by that agency who wanted to make a book for adults.

At the moment I build my own podcast and video cast which is fun but a whole load of work. It also helps me with my communication skills. So I am sure there will be re-jig of my book :)

What is your Fastlane approach?

Thanks,
Madlen
