    Who said this?

    QUESTION
Help me find the original quote, please. It's something about the easiest way to make money is to find a large transaction going from A to B and get in between them (and get a % as a lead fee, or agency fee). I have a feeling I first heard this from MJ. It has always stuck with me, and now I...

DisLife... you have made me think :) Correct. And I need to lead with that in my marketing message to potential clients. This is an excellent idea. It solves many problems at once. Thank you for the advice... I feel like I can see a road ahead of me again :) Caro

Exactly! Got one. Because the current method is an offline solution... mine is real time, and that means better accuracy (think "no more duplicate bookings"), shorter booking process (freeing up time), and one source of information (no more printed pdfs with version numbers). It's a pretty...

Unless you have an enormous family, and a zillion friends, you are going to have to "go to market". Otherwise you don't have a business.... am I right? (Also, friends and family will encourage and support you...because that's the nature of their relationship with you... but when you present the...

    I've Read The Millionaire Fastlane!

    GOLD! HOT!
I read it many years ago... but came across this quote today that hit me at just the right moment: The Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco | For example, if you buy an audio system that costs $4,000 and you make $10 per hour, what’s the real price? What is the weight of the poop? That price is...

Yes, this is not new software, it's been around a few years already. I have several small clients using it repeatedly. But to the event industry, which seems to have ignored the arrival of the internet, it's still very new.

Here's one of my fave bits of advice, from my fave business book: The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber | Said another way, the Entrepreneurial Model has less to do with what’s done in a business and more to do with how it’s done. The commodity isn’t what’s important—the way it’s...

Good question. When I approach clients in UK, for example, I just hear "We use Saleforce"... but no reason why we can't interface to whatever other CRMs we come across.

No :) I do the first 20% of the process (specifically related to the events industry) The other 80% is what Salesforce does (the CRM functionality that happens from there on) There's no competition or overlap.... think of Salesforce as the cake, and me as the icing. Lots of people in the...

    Selling to the big guys

    EXECUTION
No, no, I haven't explained it properly :) The view that it's Salesforce or me is a misconception. Salesforce is a CRM system. Mine is a booking system that would feed into Salesforce. ie. mine is the front-of-house, Salesforce is the back end. So... rather than approach each Salesforce event...

My first reaction is that you might be making the classic mistake of deciding on a product/service and then taking it to market to see if there is a demand. Rather look for a demand, or a problem, and develop something to satisfy that.

So I have a piece of software that would make a very nice "front end" to what Salesforce offers to the events industry (conference and exhibition organisers mainly). I have grown tired of trying to market it myself - there is nothing wrong with my product, but I am seen as too small, too...

Can one be too innovative? I'm ready to give up.

Very good advice. I try, but I am certainly not a natural (INTJ). Yep, that's the conclusion I am coming to. I've sunk too much money into developing something whizz-bang, and it's too much for the potential client to get their head around. I need to sell a basic version, and tell them about...

Can one be too innovative? I'm ready to give up.

Hi there I wasn't clear, sorry. The target market is event organisers... in this case it's a real-time booking system for exhibitions.

Can one be too innovative? I'm ready to give up.

That's a good idea. Finding them may be tricky, but I know some people who know people... :) Will do. I fear I've been there for about 7 of the last 10 years, though, and I'm getting demotivated. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated :) Caro

    I've Read The Millionaire Fastlane!

Read it ages ago. Read it again, ages ago. Told someone just this morning that it's in my Top 3 business books, and probably the one with the least woowoo BS! :)

Can one be too innovative? I'm ready to give up.

I know, I know, we all talk about innovation as some kind of super-power or key-to-riches. But... here's my problem... for 10 years of more, I've been developing online software for the conference/exhibition industry. It's really, really good stuff. But the industry is stuck in the '70s...
