Interesting thread.

I've just ordered some - I've heard great things about magnesium for guys, e.g. 'supports testosterone hormone for the gym' but I haven't gotten around to trying it myself.

I'll post an update here if I notice any significant changes.

I've also heard good things about supplementing Zinc, has anyone here had any positive experiences related to it?

Just did a shit ton of blood tests, including magnesium. Should have results soon. We'll see if I'll join your magnesium cult or not lol.

Sorry guys, my magnesium levels are within the normal range. Closer to the lower end but still within range.

Found this awesome article describing the three different kinds of mag. Glycinate appears to be the one to get for good moods, stress reduction, better sleep, etc.

Over 80% of Americans are Mag deficient: 80% of Americans Are Deficient in This Mineral That Controls Sugar Cravings | Eat This Not That

Deficiency is especially true for heavy coffee drinkers, as it affects Mag absorption (or so it seems):

Magnesium Deficiency can cause many mental health aliments.
Supplementing it can help ease a lot of mental health issues (and also help sleep):

I've begun supplementing 200 Mg Magnesium Citrate with every meal and I can't tell you how much of a turnaround it's made in my life, it's unbelievable.

Before, I'd get irritable on a good day, furious on bad days. Everywhere I'd go, there's a cloud of anger and nasty thoughts swirling around.

Now? Super calm, happy, grateful, can't be bothered. I've never taken SSRI's, but this is as close to what it must be like.

I'll say it until I'm blue in the face: Correcting a deficiency is x100000 more effective than adding ANYTHING (Workouts, Meditating, Journaling, etc.).

(Those are all important, but it wasn't the problem that needed to be corrected).

I've struggled with Anger, Irritability, Anxiety, Depression literally all my life, and all it took was correcting a deficiency to turn it around.

Now I'm on a solid baseline level of mood. I'd highly suggest you do your research and give it a shot!
this is very eye opening.

I take medicine that actually causes magnesium deficiency.

I'm going to try to get more magnesium, this is a much needed post.

pumpkin seeds (156mg 1 oz.) and chia seeds (111mg 1 oz.) are also very high in magnesium. Easy to throw in blender also if you are already drink something everyday.

Can't say I notice any difference though after starting to eat em.

So… after 4 days…
- sleep is deeper and longer
- dreaming each night (no nightmares, just regular weird stuff)
- tired more during the day, not sure why!
- taking it as a supplement, not topical (I did that for a week and while it could have been placebo effect, it did make me sleep better. Problem was, the skin got dry with the minerals, not a pleasant feeling)
- I didn’t do any blood tests or anything of the type. I’m totally ok with just experimenting on myself.

conclusion? Will continue for a few weeks and then stop to see the difference and later decide if the change is temporary or permanent.

In the spirit of giving: my go-to immunity booster is apple cider vinegar. A table spoon into a glass of water - first thing in the morning on empty stomach and boom! Keeps the colds away. Anyone else doing it?

Took it for 3 months after reading this.

For context, I wake up at around 5AM. I used to have a big crash around 1-2PM everyday, where I would be incredibly foggy, tired, and unable to get work done; literally had to sleep on the spot for 30+ minutes to recover. I would also be very irritated and depressed in general during the whole afternoon and evening.

I took marine magnesium, 300mg in the morning every day:
- The above crash is completely gone. I also feel much more present and aware throughout the day, and way more relaxed in general. Flipside is that I also feel more tired at the end of the day, but in a good way.
- Started dreaming again.
- Used to have problems focusing on anything, and zoning out frequently throughout the day, with magnesium this almost never happens and I can focus much longer.

Overall it's been pretty positive, but your mileage may vary. I'll experiment a bit more with it and see what comes up.

Hmm is someone here starting a Magnesium supplement company? ;)

I'll add my experience with magnesium. I started taking Magnesium Citrate a couple years ago to help with sleep, and I found it didn't really help. I would still wake up in the middle of the night and be awake for about an hour. I stopped taking it for about a year, and I just started taking it again last week. Same deal. My sleep is better now, but that's not due to the magnesium.

I don't feel a high like a lot of people are saying they feel. I take the 250mg dose daily that it says to on the bottle. I also take epsom salt baths once or twice a week, and I can say that I do feel pretty relaxed when I'm getting magnesium via epsom salt and supplementation vs when I'm off the supplement.

Is it a panacea for anxiety, insomnia, and Mood issues? I'm not sure. I don't think you can draw a conclusion from limited anecdotal experiences from reddit. But even if it is the placebo effect, all that matters is you feel better now than you did before, and I'm happy that you and others do.

Yeah it's not a silver bullet, but was a huge first step in fixing a whole host of other issues. I'd say it helped me get to a place mentally to address those things. Cutting caffeine and extended breathing + meditation practices (sometimes 1+ Hours) for instance, helped a lot too after I started supplementing mag. YMMV

I've heard of this. Haven't tried mag myself but something I'll definitely look into. Have intermittently dealt with anxiety and, though I don't have anger issues, I am very irritable sometimes. Worth exploring and trying out.

Been a while.

Still take Magnesium Citrate on occasion as needed.

Still one of the best medical decisions I've made.

The next biggest thing that's helped with mood since then was fixing some slight sleep apnea. The magnesium may have helped with mood because of the deeper sleep, something not considered or measured when making this post. So YMMV, people.

How's everyone else doing? @Kak did you ever get to try yours?

Can confirm, magnesium is legit.

One of the very few supplements that we actually need. The soil has been eroded and modern food no longer provides adequate levels of this mineral.

Be careful though:
  • supplementing with the wrong type of magnesium can and will cause deficiency
  • getting too much magnesium in one done will also cause deficiency, because the body will freak out and flush everything out

To the best of my knowledge, the best form of magnesium that actually gets into your nervous system is an expensive variety called Magnesium L-threonate. Best taken in small doses throughout the day.

Another good option is buying mineral water which is naturally rich in magnesium. Drinking it will ensure a steady supply of the mineral. This is how the body expects magnesium intake. This is how our ancestors did it for millions of years.
