TED talks have gotten mixed reps but in my opinion, they’re a great way of saving time because often an Author has to summarize their entire book or idea into a 15-20 minute speech. It’s very concise, it’s very to the point, and it’s very succinct. If you want to delve in further, you grab the book.

Okay here’s how this thread works.

Post a single TED / TEDx talk per reply (there’s a reason for this,) and hit the ‘like’ button for ones you got value from. Talks at Google and TED-esque talks are fine too.

The reason? I want it to be easy for Newcomers to come into this thread, and sort them by the most quality content.

most liked.jpg

So the idea is: one single talk per reply so people go back and ‘vote on' the ones they found most helpful via the ‘like’ button. One ‘like’ is considered one vote.

So it’s easy to see which ones we like the best.

By clicking the like button on any post you are agreeing that “I watched this talk, enjoyed it and intend to cast a vote for it.”

Anyway, I’m gonna start...

Carol Dweck on Growth vs Fixed Mindsets

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_X0mgOOSpLU

Carol Dweck researches “growth mindset” — the idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and to solve problems. In this talk, she describes two ways to think about a problem that’s slightly too hard for you to solve. Are you not smart enough to solve it … or have you just not solved it yet? A great introduction to this influential field.

Bjarke Ingels on Hedonistic Sustainability:

The examples might be entertaining to listen to (if the accent does not bother you) but the implications could really be huge.
Rolling out innovations might become a bigger challenge than actually developing solutions at some point.
Adopting that kind of systems thinking on a large scale could really make the world a better place (damn, writing that feels weird since watching Silicon Valley) with fewer painful sacrifices.

I love how this relates to the design and symbolism behind it. This one is one of my favorite and worth watching.

So far I’m posting all talks from Authors from the Fastlane Bookstore

That’s actually where I came up with this idea. I saw all those great books but it was also daunting. “Wow, that’s a lot of books... I’ll never have time to read all those”

So I just found the corresponding TED talks to get a quick 20 minute summary of their work to listen to as i go out my day.

Daaaamn, would have bet all I own that Sylvia Earle's talk has been posted by now.
Good thing nobody knew.

Is it okay to post one talk per day?
If not ... ummm ... what now?

Today: Peter Diamandis - Abundance is our future.

His talk is a gateway into a world of unconventional big and meaningful business thinking.
Books are "Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think" and "BOLD: How to Go Big, Create Wealth and Impact the World".
I must add that BOLD is okaaay, but it did not quite meet my expectations.
"XPrize" and "Singularity University" are other search terms to feed Google with (or DuckDuckGo).
Have also read "Exponential Organizations" which is the better BOLD in my humble opinion (more advice for execution planning).
Ray Kurzweils predictions may be a lot too optimistic, but it makes sense to plan and strategize with technological progress in mind.

Why was this stuff never taught in my high school speech class?!?!?

Imagine all the awkwardness that could've been averted...smh
Just if you like any of them, if you could hit the ‘like’ button cuz i want to keep a tally of which ones are the favorites

This.
Solving public issues like trashed-up infrastructure and piss-soaked public areas in India by getting everyone to do it, not just blame the government.

The speaker did a little cost tabulation, and turns out, even at Indian currency prices, repairing some pavements or covering up drains doesn't need to cost a bomb.

Sometimes citizens need to do extra stuff to improve things around them. Doesn't need to be Mother Theresa-ish.

EDIT: Forgive the title....its not derogatory!

Yeah, watching the talks seems to be the big challenge. Might have to add a "watch one per day" schedule entry.

I think Sylvia Earle is pretty well known (might post that in the near future, though) ... but it makes sense to watch her talk and the following as a bundle:

Glimpses of a pristine ocean - by Enric Sala

The concept of baselines is cool in general.
I know that things that make sense often do not make financial sense.
But in this case something is a financial no-brainer ... but it still does not get done.

Hardcode capitalist will refer to the "tragedy of the commons". One entity should own the oceans ... then they would take care of it.
Maybe ... but I think this talk points to an issue that we do not talk about enough.

We often think: what can we do with what we have. We should ask ourselves "what could be" with blue skies thinking more often.

For me it is a talk by Richard St. John: "Secrets of Success in 8 words".

This TED talk is the first I saw and it is still a reference to me!

Sylvia Earle on "How to protect the oceans"

A deserving prize winner. Awesome structure, emotional and clear presentation.
Combined with the talk by Enric Sala I feel that we get a pretty good big picture understanding of the magnitude of the overfishing troubles.

Love the "Victory of the Commons" part :) ... and the "Some people will follow you, some will ignore you but nobody will stop you" quote as a reply to excuses / limiting beliefs.
