Ay... My mentor...
He landed the biggest fish in the sea. Apple.
Before that, disney, sony, etc etc.

I look at him and I think "wtf is this?"

It is mind boggling.
But I was there in a sense. I know what he did. I know the struggles he had and how he overcame them. The question isn't IF I can do the same, it is just that WOW, is it ever crazy what he is upto these days!

I take solace in the fact I was taught by one of the best.
But yeah, nothing makes you feel out of touch like seeing it face to face.

So my challenge to myself is simple...
Make a footprint big enough for others to fall into and despair
:p

Not that the despair part is important, but you know what I mean

Be so cool, it breaks people up inside
Thats it,
Thats all my goal is

His websites became more like "candy" and lost the "coded" feel.
So basically his graphics used HUE in order to improve the saturation balance.
This then helped give a feeling of DYNAMISM rather than "look what I made"
Meaning it looks active rather than stuck.

In his relationships with buyers, he became more deadpan, more secure and established. Earlier on he was flowery and flowing and trying to bend people's ears. That kind of thing is tiring.

Instead of scaling his business with a thousand personal connections that he manipulated he made it place of evolution, so that workers weeded themselves out. He rewarded good work results and highlighted those workers.

He cultivated an environment of success, through encouragement, sterness, and reasonable work ethic that got peoples motors going along in the right direction. So by the time he got in the room with apple, I don't think he needed to adjust for them, I think it was just a matter of telling everybody to keep up what they were doing as always because the high quality was already cultivated.

In this way he believes that if you are having to adjust for everything in the last moment, you haven't thought hard enough about what matters to who you are selling to. You should instinctively sense what is needed like a mother knows her child is hungry or upset. This is called being ADEPT and it requires a conscious effort to be the proactive force in the environment.

Don't think of all this as trying to become someone else who you are not. Realise that it is already who you are and fight what is stopping you inside from being the real you.

It is not a matter of ambition, it is a matter of integrity.

Managing expectations vs managing price
I was thinking today that sometimes I lower prices when peoples expectations are high and raise them when peoples expectations are too low.
Thing is, sometimes people feel deflated buying a product that is cheap because they want you to take the initiative to do more planning and preparation work to fit into the price so it feels more like a bargain or package of goodness rather than a depressing "here it is" kind of deal. Othertimes people get so hyped for what you are offering that you have to remind them that there is only so much that can be done, and price things so that once the rose colored glasses come off they are still happy with the value trade.

My old mentor charges in the millions for his services because he uses a TEAM, and that team performs a project within a few weeks, and then he maintains a consultant long term for the client. Sociology is at play there, more people often means better results, permitting higher prices, so don't be afraid to improve outlook, and raise the price equivalent to the raise in people's expectation.

I've been considering using a team, in order to condense down delivery time of services. Having it be like a relay race, handing off the baton. But what might be even better is if we have each person specialise in an aspect and then carve up an end result.
That might get me a step closer to being a giant...

He also uses contracts, as in he contracts the size of work to each project.
I think this could work for me, and that I need to set up teams that work on contract. Then set up a team that brings in or finds opportunities. That way I could remain flexible and utilise my knowledge to mastermind rather than nitpick.

Yeah, no doubt that is how he scaled like he did... clever, clever.
That solves some of my scale issues, but another scale issue is I'd need to retain those workers with a steadier income stream they can opt into. Also I want to consider how to make this replicable, how to expand it into hundreds or thousands of workers. Hmmm, I smell opportunity here cuz I met a lot of councelors that complain of not enough work that I could use... Yes, look for those complaining of no work! Then match work to clients and projects and training.

Ok, specialist teams and general teams, I'll use both. That way specialists can do general jobs if they like, but we hustle them up for specialist jobs. That way we maintain our specialists and only lose generalists, and from those generalists maybe we encourage them to grow into a specialty.

I think the reason he got bigger was cultivation
Simplifying the process and the messages he gives clients while maximising the scope of what he and his team can deal with

Deal with it easier...
I think that was one of his main focuses
As well as craftmanship
Cultivation of his team and sales and business relationships
Yeah, I think I get it now.

Part of me thinks it is harder for me because I've come into business with big ideas.
They have me trapped in a corner unable to take easy paths
But I think my goal isn't the same as his
I think I want to be more efficient, and with a far larger reach

So how do I do it then?
Cultivation? Craftsmanship? Creation of ease?
OR...
Focus, Insight, Unflinching. Respect the task.

Ah, I think I see what I need to do to beat him.
Process. His process is loose. Which is good, you should be sort of loose and flexible, but he is not aware enough of the details.
Yeah, no way he can beat me on that footing... I'll always win if I develop a stronger process and foundation.

Ok, so foundation

Acquiring of assets - you need to bring in talent
Leadership and inspiration - the concept needs to unite people
Activities - a free flow of concepts and processes that lead innevitably to result
Developing Space (CENTS) - a focus on what is needed, avoiding unscaleable/uncontrollable/unenterable, and maximising time
Awesomeness - knowledge of how to simplify or skip pointlessly chaotic steps

Then implementation...

Big picture
Attitudes - mild interest of buyers, but large imagination
Purchasing momentum - rich people spike (prestige), poor people trickle (bargain), groups grow (cult), society validates (brand)
Sanity - reasonable purchasing habits and how this affects viability
The effective sale - effort invested versus return (developing highest efficiency)
Trends - the type of behaviour already going on at all times can be expected to continue

And empowerment

Small picture
Stirring the pot
Wit
Clear aims
Connecting with results

Ah, yes, of course
INTELLIGENCE is how I win this battle
Not raw talent, though, I won't run from a challenge

SEIZE THE INITIATIVE
In moments of chaos or uncertainty
Only confident action can reveal what you need to know
Take it

I struck gold today while working with a client. I realised I can do like my mentor does. I can be a consultant that creates custom solutions to perfect the outward facing components of their marketting structure.
Where my mentor creates a website, I can create a fixed solution to my clients needs and charge say a few K for it (If I ever do it for big companies I'll employ enough people and get millions for them... but starting small first)
It requires a few conferencing calls to get their exact needs, then development, then training and walkthrough.
I can also do add ons where I give extra services for a bit more.

The reason this is gold is it is SCALEABLE and TIME efficient
Meaning as I do more and more models I'll have better templates to draw from in order to develop solutions faster and better.
It is scaleable because with time reduced in the creative phases I can start focusing on more clients.

I think this is the opportunity to take my first GIANT'S step.

I've got this strange feeling, like all my insecurities are ready to burst off of me.
I dunno why I'v been so afraid.
I think it is because my ability was clouded before.
But now as I see clearer and clearer, the force inside of me yearns to break free and just do everything it can.

I suppose I no longer care about filling my mentor's old shoes,
I have my own destiny and my own shoes to fill
And I look forward to it
