Evaluating Software Idea

Hey Guys,

Since this is my first thread, lets introduce myself. I'm a developer and I make WordPress extensions. I have had one big hit: 'Facebook Page Promoter Lightbox', It i'm struggeling to find new plugin ideas (actually I have enough ideas, but evaluating them seems hard).

The problem is that I waste a lot of time developing and then find there isn't realy a demand for it.

So my question is what do you evaluate BEFORE developing a product, what is your process. What are some make or break factors

Ask yourself, would i use this software when its done? Will this actually provide value for anyone?
Do market research, ask for peoples opinions etc.

I started my own software company. It's doing really well. I was already my target market. I knew other people had the same problems as me and asked a bunch of people what they thought. I made a super rough version within a week. Within 2 months i had hundreds of downloads. Fast forward now, I have 4 coders working with me.

How well do you know the problem? You should find out if OTHER people have the same problem first.

If you know the problem well enough and have a great solution, AND other people have the same problem that you are solving then that can 'validate' your product in a way.

Ice Cream kid said it well in the Astonishing secrets thread, start with marketing first NOT the product first approach.

Have you tried asking your target market? Like Reddit or another forum with WP users and presell your idea?

"Hey guys I'd like to develop a '[enter plugin idea]' which will sell for $9 ... is this something you would use?"

Research what sucks about Wordpress. Many people hate the eCommerce plugins available.

I know the feeling of spending a lot of time developing and then finding out it's not as well-loved a product as you envisioned. Well, sometimes it's a genuinely bad idea and sometimes it just takes a lot of resources to get it accepted. Somebody should have a burning desire for the product from the start. From there you can build out.
