Alright, I'm tired of being a "side-hustler" always looking for side gigs while trying to focus on my sales "career".

This isn't working out, especially with a little one coming soon.

With that said, I've made the decision to build an agency.

Granted -- I know I'm entering a field with like a bajillion other people, but it seems like local businesses still need assistance with their SEO.

More importantly, I want to build SOPs and processes instead of being the person who fulfills the order. Gotta think BIGGER.

My goal is to get 10 paying clients before May 31st.

I'm using this progress thread as my accountability to make it happen.

Alright so, first thing first, I'm going to use Upwork as a way of getting clients to start.

No need in trying to re-invent the wheel. No website, no logo, none of that.

My action item for today is to send out 20 applications on Upwork.

Let's get to it.

Take a look at Josh Nelson’s content. He runs a digital agency. But if you really think about it, it’s heavily focused on lead generation. He attracts leads to local businesses right now he’s in plumbing.

The website, SEO, and GMB are additional but he productized it by hiring team members and SOPs.

Best of luck! Will be following the progress. Can't emphasize enough the importance of collecting and displaying reviews from your initial clients. This will move mountains in terms of how easy future sales go down.

Quick hack for SOPs - find a Youtube video that summarizes how to do what you want to document effectively. Create a transcript of that video with Descript then have ChatGPT or NotionAI summarize the transcript. Tweak to your liking and specifics. Have created hundreds this way!

Following — good luck buddy.

Be careful with Upwork — selling through Upwork is VERY different than getting your own clients. On Upwork people are already looking for SEO, they just need to make sure you’re the right person. Outside of Upwork people aren’t looking for SEO… so you have to convince them SEO is a good idea before you can convince them you’re the right person for it.

So the sales process outside of Upwork is much harder!

"Who already has your clients?" (Jay Abraham)

A lot of web developers might have potential clients for an SEO agency.

Expanding on this: any website with lots of content that is not getting the visitors they want. They are already spending either time or money (or both) on content - without results. Bring them results and they will pay you some of that money.

Also, can you pick a niche to specialize in? e.g. established home & garden ecom sites that need SEO content?

You could probably find potential clients by searching products in that niche on Google and seeing who is advertising. They are already spending money on ads - can you make the case to them for spending on SEO/organic results?

Following along with your progress - good luck!

Want to write a quick update:

20 applications later and 1 new client. Took the call during a lunch break which was hectic!

Signed him up for $300/month for GMB only. Should be a slam dunk for me and a (somewhat) quick win to boost up the reviews and get a testimonial.

Going to get him kicked off on Friday.

I have one more person in the pipeline and I think I can get them, call is tomorrow.

Is GMB google my business? You do just that? Where is a good place to learn how to do it?

Congrats so far!!

Growth is starting to happen, but it's taking a lot of persistence.

I landed another client after 40 applications. This time the monthly amount was significantly higher, I got the client at $1,000/month for SEO. This will be a little more tricky because it's a new(ish) site and they're going after some rather esoteric keywords. It's going to take a lot of writing and links, but I think I can get good results.

I also saw this while sifting through Upwork postings. Couldn't help but laugh...

Right now that makes 2 clients for SEO.

The next step is recording my process so I can start training a VA.
