Thread: My Diary - It's time to take action !

Ok, here we are...

Time for me to really do something and I thought it would be nice to share my journey with everybody.
I know that sharing can be a fabulous way of getting things grow.

I've been looking to launch something for years without really doing it. I have been freelance for 5 years but this is not a good way to become a millionaire as you still sell your time to others. I also created some blogs, one of them just starts to make hundreds of dollars per month but even I will go on with it because it's about my passion, I also know it will not drive my to the fastlane because it does not respect the commandment of control (because it is mostly based on affiliation) and of scale (because this is "just" a blog and it's in french).

So are I am. I would love to build a web application because I found this is a very good model that "speak" to me. I love what 37signal guys did and still do. Maybe it's a wrong way to start with the kind of business before having the idea but let's say it's a starting point for me.

Now, it's time for the idea. Honestly, I do not have any accurate idea yet but you know what? I don't care. One thing I know is that the idea is nothing. First, I have a lot of friends who started a business with an idea, and now their business is hundreds miles far from the original idea because a lot of things had changed during the execution time that make them realize then need to change the original idea to be successful. Second, I am the kind of guy who don't care about the fact that my idea could be stolen because I know sharing a idea is the best (probably the only) way to build something good.

Ok so let's GO now. This is my diary and I will tell you everything !

So, first step for me, the IDEA.

After I wrote this post I just started to think about the idea and it came to my mind that I just need to stop thinking and just pick one idea I have.

My idea, which in fact is the idea of my wife, is to allow fishermen, boat owner, to get in touch with fishermen who have no boat. Boat owners will connect to the site and will be able to provide fishing trips. Fishermen will be able to connect with boat owner for a fishing party.

The business model is to make boat owner to pay for a yearly fee (let's say 75$/year) to be registered into the website and to be paid by every trip from visitor (for example, the fishermen will pay 20$ for a day fishing to the boat owner and I will take 10%).

Next step for me is to understand if this is really a need, which I think it is but I need to look around dedicated forum around fishing to see if this could be something interesting or not.

Ok, I did my homework.

First of all, I tried to identify my competitors on this market and the thing is that I did not found any website doing what I want to do with the connection between boat owner and fishermen. This can sound as an excellent news for most of people but for me it can also means that no competitor = no market = no money...

The second point is related to some legal aspect. After speaking with some boat owners I realized that it is not allow for a non-professionnel guy to be paid for a fishing trip with his boat here in France. I don't know yet if this is the case everywhere but it looks like as a stopper and would means no success for this business.


So I just stop here for this project and will move to another one.

May look into more of a rental situation. It is not a guided fishing trip but somebody with a boat looking for somebody to fish with. Or somebody with a boat who does not use it all the time and would like to make some extra money by sharing it with somebody else.

I used to own a drift boat but never really used it as you have to have two people, one to row and one to fish. I would have gotten alot more use out of it if I had somebody to fish with. You also need two cars unless you use a shuttle service another problem you could solve.
