well, it is a little too open-ended of a question, isn't it?
What type of website?
If it is my bank's website I want to see 'the meat', and little or not marketing/distractions.
If it is a forum then I want to get the right information...
Common things I like to see are always about usability: easy to navigate, easy to find what I am looking for (not a deep menu but a flat one), nice/friendly look and feel; less flash animations that are not needed at all; a good shopping cart that does not ask me for stuff I don't need, or to register to a site that does not need some irrelevant information (why do you care what is my annual household income if I am buying a toothbrush from your website???)
The type of website I'm thinking of is one that sells goods/services. ...Good input so far.![]()
I like:
Nice design and usability
Big fonts (not BIG but easy to read not verdana 10px something more like arial 12px or 14px)
Little info on each page (I hate crowded websites were you don't know were to read, where to click, etc)
Ajax
I Dislike:
Too many ads
Long sign up/contact forms (I hate them!)
Typical spamy promotional text
Ajax bad used (no back button for example)
Endless sites that render the browser scroll bar useless
Popunders
Background music (not all but 99%)
I HATE when sites have the useless scroll bar. Really is a nuisance.
I like nicely organized pages that don't have too much info, but enough to get you interested in an organized fashion (bulleted list or something of that nature).
I'm not afraid of ads, but I don't like cheap looking AdSense links. Nice banner ones that are incorporated well and fit in are certainly fine by me.
I also like colors that are easy on the eyes. Not a huge fan of pages with darker color schemes.
What I most like to see, is exactly what I'm looking for presented in a clear manner. What do you like/ What do you wish you saw more of?
Seriously though, I think you are getting into the fascinating and rewarding topic of website usability.
This guy is the guru: http://www.useit.com/ (articles here)
The topic can be a bit overwhelming but it is definitely worth scanning through his site, tons of cool ideas about how to create a site that your users will enjoy.
