    Default Google Adsense

    I wanted to know people's opinions about what you think about google ads on your website. Sometimes I think if they are placed correctly they may look alright, but other times I think it makes your website look cheap. The reason I am asking is because I own www.cmbilt.com and have recently figured out how to put Google adsense on my site, but I'm not sure if it looks tacky and cheap. Any help out there in the fastlane as to what your opinions are about Google Ads. Thanks

    It depends on the type of site. On blogs and such they're okay but there's no real reason for them to be on a real estate site - it makes the real estate look tacky and concerned with squeezing every penny; very used car salesman. I get about $100 a month from Google ads on my website, but it's an entertainment/webcomic/hobby/forum site, so it's totally different.

    Your decision shouldn't be based on how AdSense looks on your site, but rather what is your business model.

    Adsense really is the low end of the internet food chain: you are collecting a toll for visitors to leave your site...that's it. You have no way to contact them again, or monetize their visit.

    This works well for certain types of sites, particularly for spam type sites, where people are immediately disappointed and look for some where else to find what they are looking for.

    But if you are interested in providing value to your visitors then many other ways of monetizing your site (like capturing emails and recommending products/resources) will work better than AdSense.

    In your specific case I think it can be a bad idea. You'll risk losing your clients for a couple of dollars.

    Adsense doesn't make any sense for your site. You finally get a visitor on your site and they get to choose between spending $81,000 on a condo you are obviously selling or clicking off your page.

    So you either get:

    1 condo lead ---> possible sale ---> $1,000+
    or
    1 ad click ---> $0.40

    biophase's is the only advice you need, I think. Are you going to make a grand off of the google ads on your page? Probably not. Not only that, they may cost you some sales because they make your site look cheap.

    Thanks Carl!

    Tyler, you have to decide on a purpose for your site. Is the purpose of your site to make people buy a condo or to fill it up with ads and make money off of clicks and advertising.

    You can't do it both ways. You don't walk into a Walmart and see ads for Target in there. Once a visitor gets to your site everything on your site needs to funnel them into a process.

    Example:
    1 -I'm selling Widget ABC, my site contains all the info needed to make the customer buy Widget ABC. The customer doesn't need to go anywhere to make their decision.

    2 - I'm making money off ads for Widget ABC, my site contains sporadic, confusing info about Widget ABC. Customers get frustrated reading my poor information, but the ads are written well. Customer reads them and is interested and clicks on them.

    When I see ecommerce stores with Adsense it makes me believe that the store is not making any money. My impression is that the owner is frustrated with conversions and they figure, if I can't get them to buy from my store I should at least get $0.40 off of them.

    Biophase's advice really is all you need, in this case, and rep++ to him for that!

    Simply put, I would only put Adsense on a site that doesn't have any other way to make money; one that isn't specifically marketing a product or service. And, that's really pretty rare, because almost everything has a product or service you can sell. But, sites like Myspace, and Youtube would use something like Adsense, because they get a lot of visitors, and want revenue; but don't really have any product to sell.

    If your site is specifically to sell whatever your business offers, then you should not put Adsense ads on it, it's as simple as that. Not only because they can make the site look tacky and cheap, but also because they could cost you a sale; and not only that, a sale to your competition! And, obviously, you don't want that.
