Yeah, that is unfortunate. But the good thing is that the developers usually fix those problems quickly. These things are very annoying, but since the program relies on scraping information from other services... these things happen.
Give it a few days.
Don't know if they became independent of G or not, but relying on G and using their data is a losing proposition if you do not go through their API, which also has other issues.
I might share for some of you good folks my own suite of tools when they are completely ready - you'll hopefully be good little beta testers, won't you?![]()
Is this something you're building / having built? Because if so, I know of a big NEED in the IM community - they want a competition analysis tool where the user can load a LIST of keywords into the tool and have it analyze the competition automatically for each keyword (kind of a set it and forget it type of thing), rather than having to load each keyword in one by one and wait for the results to come up before adding another keyword. I've heard numerous people say this (myself included) on BHW.
Edit: Looks like a tool like I described above was just released a couple weeks ago on BHW. Can't wait to try it out!

I guess I will have to take my previous message back a bit... apparently the rank tracker in Market Samurai is not going to work in the future either unless you pay some extra. Not good.
I liked that you could do it all from one tool, but apparently those times are over now. Or do you have any suggestions for kw research, rank tracking and competition analysis?

By reading their apology it is obvious to anyone that they did not prepare for this eventuality, they did not have a plan B, which is worrying as G has been known for at least 5 years to be shutting shit down. I mean talk about amateurish.
It is also crystal clear how to profit from this.
They've been looking for a reason to shut it down. Think about it, they made a huge mistake offering this program for a one time cost, every week there are updates... there's no profit in their business model. They have to keep maintaining this thing forever, and therefore their profits are continually erroding.
They could easily fix this if they wanted, but this is their excuse to actually try and pull some users into a business model that might be profitable.
I would say, "That sounds like a smart move" but I'm one of the users.
I have my own metrics that MS wasn't really helping with, so I wasn't using it for anything besides rank tracking anyway. I'm a little sad about losing that, but I've mostly decided on relying on GWT and my tracking tools for that now. The delay is acceptable, especially since my network is growing and I probably shouldn't be checking stats daily anyway.
MS paid for itself several times over in lessons and cold hard cash, so I'm not going to complain as I dustpan it. I hope the team does well in the future.
I don't think they'll be able to fix it soon, check out this post on link-assistant's blog - Official confirmation from our CEO: SEO PowerSuite is NOT affected by the rumored Google algo change (which actually didnt happen ) | SEO Blog of Link-Assistant.Com
In my opinion, Market Samurai should have begun charging monthly fees from the very beginning, or at least shortly after the launch of the software. This way they could have invested the money into a plan B, APIs, third-party databanks, etc.
Glad I never paid for this program. I always found it very laggy and frustrating.
And am I reading this right? When asked what they are using in place of Google, they basically make a case for Bing being at least as good as Google for getting this info. Wrong. Beginning of the end for Market Samurai.
And they go on to admit parts of their product, like Rank Tracker, were slow and frustrating..... yet they never did anything about that until being forced to do so now.

so if MS is gonna suck soon, what other alternatives are there? Specifically for keyword research and rank tracking. Anyone using SEO PowerSuite? or just the SEOSpyglass and Rank Tracker they provide?
Most of the stuff in all these programs is unnecessary. The only thing worthwhile is backlink data. I don't care if I have 50 billion "competitors" results show up on G for my target keywords when I only have at max. 20 competitors in even the biggest markets. In most I have far less. I can ascertain how well they are optimised by eye-balling the results and the top 5 sites.
It's much better to observe a new site climbing quickly even if they rank at no.10 or below then a site at no.1 that has been there for years. They actively did what worked years ago and are living off passive stuff to stay where they are now. Much better to observe what works now instead of 2005.
Happy hunting.

I've got the whole set uploaded on a VPS. I just prefer MS for doing research because that's what I learned on and I feel like I can trust their data (not saying there's anything wrong with the SEO PowerSuite products though) but there is a new competition analysis tool that came out on BHW that I'll pick up soon called UltimateNicheFinder.
This.

Market Samurai - Buggiest Program Ever
Hi guys
Ben here from the Noble Samurai team,
First of all I just wanted to say thank you for your continued support over the months and years. We wouldn't be able to do what we do without your loyal following…
Hopefully this will help to clear the air on some of your questions and concerns.,
Is Market Samurai's Rank Tracker going to work in the future?
The short answer is yes. The longer answer refers to 'what capacity' Rank Tracker will be restored. At the moment Rank Tracker is still functional, however you'll need to use your own IP to gather data (not our IP network), search using a small amount of keywords (ten or less), and most likely enter a capture message. We know this is not Ideal, however it will service the 'occasional user' in the mean time.
Restoring Rank Tracker to handle large amounts of keywords more frequently is what we are working on now. Unfortunaly though (as Eugene mention in our most recent blog post) It will now longer be possibly for us to absorb the cost for our power users in the long run. With Google clamping down on means for gathering rank data (i.e. vast amounts of automated search request), we'll be forced to source the data using paid 3rd party providers.
Due to the cost of these 3rd party providers being to the effect of $40,000 per month, for us to absorb this cost would send us bankrupt, and mean no more Market Samurai for anyone else. That would make over 400,000 current users very sad…
That said, NO ONE will be forced to subscribe to this option, and we will do our best to provide it in an affordable way. We also hope to be able to provide a free option for low numbers of keywords for the occasional user.
How long until Market Samurai, and it's Rank Tracker will up and running again?
All of Market Samurai's functionality has already been restored with the exception of our back link analysis (shipping later today) and Rank Tracker…
Our is to have a more permanent solution in the next 2-3 weeks.
If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to contact our support desk, we're not going anywhere and we're only to happy to help.
Cheers
-Ben

On their website blog Market Samurai says this:
Now ^he^ is saying it's $40,000 a MONTHIn fact, it would cost us over $40,000 a DAY to purchase this data!
Then, also on their blog they say:
Yet I confirmed that Rank Tracker by SEO PowerSuite, seoserp, and one other (forgot which it was) are STILL working.most other SEO software has been affected in some way by these changes.
Somebody man the life boats, the bullshit meter is to the max.
This is just damage control for MS because they know there's a mutany on their hands, especially when there are keyword tools like Ultimate Niche Finder that put Market Samurai to shame, especially in terms of speed. Probably won't be anywhere near as buggy either.
