Hey guys,

long time no see. Since then I've closed my first blog and have new ideas. One is getting into music industry and promoting musicians (which might grow into a Record label company..) and a new web biz idea. The web biz idea is in fitness niche (again..) and requires a blog to start. But it is NOT the main idea, blogging is getting old and too widespread so it's time to take it to next level with new layer to it. Blog is only a front end. Just a platform to get visitors and monetize them through newsletter, not ads on the blog and not only affiliate marketing. So I need anyone's advice /opinion on the domain name and business model.

1. How's Weight Training Weekly for a Brand?
2. Anyone is familiar with a newsletter biz like DailyCandy or Thrillist, etc? Any experience/advice?

I'm starting my journey second time, this time I do have part time job but it is uncertain and may go away soon. So with lil more experience I'm starting again.

Cheers

I can't offer much help here but I did watch the interview with Ben Lerer the co-founder and CEO of Thrillist over at Mixergy. The video is not available anymore for free, but you can still read the whole transcript.

Here is the link if you would like to take a look: How Thrillist Is Making Bank With Email, The Unsexy, Un-Web 2.0 Technology – with Ben Lerer | Case Studies & Business Tips

If you are going to do a newsletter like Thrillist or DailyCandy I suggest you sign up for both if you haven't done so already. This will help to give you and idea of how they put together the issues, and give you ideas for your own.

Take care.

Yeah man, that is an inspiring interview and a good example. I watched it in the past and will read the script now.

BTW, how does Weight Training Weekly sounds to you? Good brand? Too generic?

Cheers

To be as honest as possible, the name is catchy enough, but it sounds too generic.

"Weight Training" in my mind applies to EVERYONE and ANYONE that trains with weights, which in my opinion is just too big of a market to take on.

If I was going to do the same thing, I would stick with the same idea but focus on a core group of people. Weight Training for __________. I think you were doing a great job with the blog niche you had. Skinny guys that want to gain mass is much better than just people that train with weights.

There are endless possibilities of who you could actually focus on, but my suggestion would be to have a smaller core focus.

A good example that comes to mind is a guy named Jim Kelly. He has a newsletter (that is actually kind of dying out) specifically for people looking to strengthen their neck. A strong neck is critical for most contact sports and MMA type stuff.

He doesn't focus on anything else other than how to train the neck, what products help, how to warm it up, etc.

I can't really offer much else without knowing your biz idea but am confident that you can find something great. if you need anymore help brainstorming feel free to shoot me a message.

I see your point. After getting into a narrow niche I wanna go wider. Kinda try the opposite. I believe it can carve a niche out and be popular. I think that web needs big general sites along with niche sites. Just like there is bodybuilding.com and tons of smaller sites now. But this creates info overload, in bb.com alone you can get lost, esp. in forums.. And am already gonna collect data from what subscribers want (lose fat, build muscle, etc) and then as the newsletter grows separate it into parts.

I gave away my idea basically.. :D
