How do I increase my SEO?

I didn't design my site and I'm not very good with html. Are there ways I can help my search engine results? They are extremely bad right now. And when I mean bad, I mean awful. Even when you type in my book name or my site domain it doesn't make the top of the list. What can I do?

I agree with Diane. This is a fastlane forum right? My answer would be to hire someone. Would you do your own taxes? Represent yourself in court? Fix your own car? Do your own dental work? Doing everything yourself is slowlane as far as I'm concerned. If your business is seo, then that's one thing. But if not, concentrate on your business, not the peripherals.

I think it's important to learn basics for the purpose of being able to competently interact with a professional, but don't go too far. There's a million blogs on SEO. Read some stuff from seomoz and problogger. Then hire someone.

SEO is a tricky thing because Google changes the way its algorithms all the time. What stays constant is relevance, original material and value, so you can pretty much bet on that.

My advice is like the above said - hire someone or learn for yourself by searching SEO blogs. As a website owner, you should have some basic concept of proper SEO so:

- Learn how to do keyword reserach and then the importnace of keyword placement in your site.
- Relevant backlinks to your site from authority sites are important
- Keep your website fresh by constantly updating it (that's why Google loves blogs).
