I am looking to get plumbing work done on one of my houses. (Installing a new line about 20 feet from an existing one) Most of the major plumbing companies in my area have a trip charge just to make an estimate. Is this unusual? Should I be demanding the charge be waived?
I ask because electrical work, window replacement, heater installations etc have not done this.

No, it is not unusual for plumbers, etc., to charge a trip charge for an estimate. Most brand name services can charge $50, $60, or more. However, in this current economic climate it doesn't hurt to try and waive the fee. You can also try to find someone who moonlights or is self-employed (and reputable in either case), who can give you an estimate without charging a trip charge.

When a contractor tells me that it's their policy to charge for estimates, I reply that it's MY policy not to pay for estimates. I then let them know that this won't be the last property I rehab, and am interested in a long-term relationship if they're willing to be flexible.
I've only two contractors refuse to waive the estimate, and both called me back within 24 hours to let me know that they had reconsidered.
By the way, if you're looking for a big company to do this, try Delta Mechanical (Delta Mechanical - The Nations Leader In Defective Pipe Replacement) if they have an office near your. For a typical 20 ft run of main line, they'll likely charge about $650-700 (assuming they price the same in your area). You might be able to get it for a few bucks cheaper from a smaller shop, but for main line replacements and complete repiping, I like to use them.

Thanks for the heads up. I called delta mechanical and they will be out within the week. I also did what I should have done in the first place, got referrals. Found two companies that have a good reputation and will not charge a trip charge. I thought it a bit suspect to have a trip charge for estimates, especially when I figure the work will run at least $800.

I had an electrical company charge a trip fee, but they would waive it if I used them.
Haven't has it yet with plumbers.
I have never paid for an estimate and never will.
