    Default CDeniz`s fastlane diary

    Hey guys,
Ive been a member for a few months now and its time to keep track of my progress.

I have an idea to revolutionize a specific online service. I need to create a website, and I also need to create a computer application that goes with it. Prior to reading TMF I had no clue how to create a web site, how to program, ect., but I learned from TMF that MJ didnt either when he was starting out.

Anyways, I started learning HTML and CSS a few months ago thinking I could build a website with those alone. I soon learned that my website would need to have some web apps and certain functions that HTML cant do so I also began learning PHP. Im in my last year of hs so its tough but im still managing to work on this project 15 hours a week.

I will update the thread with daily (except Tuesdays and Thursdays due to night school) records of what ive learned.

The markup of the website is almost done.
    I have a logo.
I have the basic structure buttons, and forms in place.
    I've started other pages.
Purely HTML and CSS so far,, no PHP yet.

    What I know so far:
    I know basic PHP
I know basic html and css
I know basic MYSQL and OOP

    Today`s log:
I spent a few hours learning how to build a login page with PHP. Im going to implement it in my site real soon.
I also started an advanced MYSQL course. Im going to be see if I can follow it, if I cant I will go back to something more intermediate.

    Well done. Keep going.

I might suggest key milestone updates vs. daily updates. That way, people will look forward to the next update because they know it will be significant.

    Good luck!

I'd second that, this is why I like some other progress threads here.

Congratulations on moving forward. I think regular posting can be very beneficial. It is a way to keep yourself accountable and progressing. If you know you post progress every friday then you need to make sure you have accomplished something that week. 365day challenges use similar principles to keep you progressing towards your goals. Do a little bit of work each day and you will be amazed at what you have accomplished at the end. I like breaking up a big goal into lots of small ones as I feel like I am making more progress and have more direction.

Setting up a blog for this purpose can be a great idea.

I agree and disagree with Vigilante (though I know it was just a suggestion) for personal records it might be cool to keep a daily(constant) updated thread as a diary.

Alright thanks guys, Ill limit it to once a week so that my updates dont sound too repetitive.

Saturday and Sunday was spent learning some more advanced MYSQL. So far so good,, I expected it to be much harder. Working with the Terminal is not as bad as I thought it would be, and its much faster than phpmyadmin. Cliff:
Worked with the terminal for the first time
Learned how to connect to database through terminal
Learned how to make basic databases, tables, rows with sql code, aswell as join different tables
Worked on a little HTML and discovered you can make templates (which I will need to do soon).

Last week I spent most of the time learning mysql. I finished the advanced mysql course and started another one. Im actually really comfortable working with the terminal now. The course I am following now teaches how to built a webapp that creates new users and stores them in the database. I already wrote some code for that and its functioning pretty well.

I think I have almost everything I need to start integrating a few of the things that I learned to my site. I have the create account page, and I also have some code that allows users to login (it checks the db if the user exists or not).

One thing im having a problem with is understanding which code goes where. Does the create account code go on my main index? How about my login code? Or are they separated into their own file and "included" into my index. I know a little about the Model View Controller but its damn confusing,, if someone wants to enlighten me a bit please do. Ive hesitated integrating what im learning into my actual site because of this.

Overall id have to grade last week a 60% efficiency. I didnt spend enough time on Saturday and Sunday,, I gotta stay on track!
