Default To Wait or Not To Wait For New iPhone?

Well it's been a crazy last couple of weeks, not only am I actually doing work at work instead of browsing the forums, but I haven't had much time outside of work to browse/post.

    Which leads me to....

I am eligible for an upgrade on my phone on 3/5 with my contract expiring on 7/5. Since I commute to work via the wonderful Metra, I have plenty of time for browsing, but no mobile device to browse on(unless I get a connect card/plan for my Macbook ) so I am really looking forward to getting an iPhone on the 5th!

Unfortunately it looks like a new iPhone is due out in June and while I doubt it will contain all the lacking features of the current iPhone(no A2DP for bluetooth stereo headphones, no copy/paste, no landscape keyboard, etc.) I'm sure it'll be an improvement worth waiting for....

I know the no A2DP is a HUGE disappointment as I use my moto S9's on my current phone for wireless entertainment and EVERY bluetooth device I've had has had the compatibility, I was shocked to find out that the iPhone doesn't(unless you buy one of those $40-60 adapters).

To top it off, with my fat fingers it's tough to type on the narrow keys of the "portrait" keyboard.

But the #1 purpose will be to stay on top of the forums and also do research towards the biz ideas I have been kicking around and of course apply what I learn at B&P

So with all the threads on iPhones, it'd nice to get any input from current users on the pros/cons of the current iPhone as well as your "business" uses for it and ultimately if it's worth waiting for the new iPhone.

It's hard to tell, I say go with the 3G. There are no solid confirmations yet on a new iPhone in June. The only hard evidence right now is speculation from "spy pics" of a back shell that is now a matte black finish and metal along with Tim Cook announcing new iPhone prices.

You never can tell with Apple though. They aren't known for big announcements, just a "Oh yea, we'll be releasing this next month" kind of deal.

I would skip the iphone and buy a netbook with a 3g built in. Easy and light to carry and easier to browse.

    Thanks Matt!

I thought the opposite was true, that Apple loves to toot its own horn

BTW you're on the Modmyi forums right? That's where I heard about the new iPhone and I even looked up the patent application on the USPTO site so it looks like it's in the works. The only downside is I'm not gonna be one of those "wait in line and pay a premium to be the first to have it" so it looks like unless the new iPhone is just completely knockout that I'll go with the 3G.

Keyn- a netbook is tempting, especially since I can get one cheap from work, but the mobile internet services are about $50-60/mo vs. the $30/mo for the iPhone, something that'll really cut into my cashflow which is close to negative at the moment, but of course won't be for long

I have come to find that even "your" special pricing may not be the cheapest! haha found that out on quite a few things.

As for the phone, have you ever used one for a period of time? i get annoyed quick of not being able to type efficiently. have you looked at any other smart phones that have full browsers and an actual keyboard like the HTC's?

Yea I'm on modmyi, but have been browsing macrumors more often lately. There very well could be a new phone coming out in June, or it could be announced in June then released in November, or released in June and ships in August...lol.

You have a good point by being the "first to have it" I usually stay away from brand new gadgets to let all the problems get buffed out.

As far as the texting keyboard on the iPhone. I was a little weary of mine before I got it, but Apple has an auto correct feature that is able to tell what you are trying to say and works pretty well. I am able to text pretty quickly on my phone. I DO wish the landscape keyboard was available though.

And speaking of netbooks, Apple is apparently gonna release one this year also.

Update- Adi got a killer deal on a Storm(friend of hers got a BOGO deal and sold it for the cost of cancellation fees on the 2nd line) and we unlocked it today. I really love this phone, but I doubt I can find one for under $400 which is what leads me back to the iPhone:

I saw on AT&T's site that refurb 8gb are $99 and 16gb are $199, which is about the max I have budgeted. Keep in mind:

-We are on a family plan w/ AT&T(so other carriers are out of the question)
-We are trying to stick to a strict budget on ALL purchases(we're selling old phones/electronics to pay for these phones)
-My monthly bill will jump $30/mo with any unltd data plan.

I'm not sure how long it will take for the bugs to be worked out of the new iPhone when it comes out in June, and if it's a major improvement over the 3g, I'll probably have to wait until July to get one anyways as I'm not that desperate that I'll pay a premium or wait in a huge line for one

On top of the keyboard/stereo headphones issues, I also noticed after playing with the Storm that with the iPhone there is:

    -no removable battery
    -no expandable memory

So if any of the iPhone users here can offer some examples as to what it has done to make you more productive please chime in.

I don't want this to just be another toy, but an actual investment

I'm a iphone 3G user and i used to have a blackberry storm.... first thing is that the blackberry doesn't even compare to the iphone, right now the blackberry has a lot of issues and its pretty slow i couldn't get anything done, once they fix it and get rid of that push screen they may have something. The iphone as far as productivity for me is good to me. Heres what I like and don't like about the iphone:

    What I like:
-Hooks up to my cars bluetooth with no problem(able to talk to clients easily with out getting a ticket.lol
-Multi Task browse the internet while on a call
-On the internet if i'm doing research on one product and need to go to another and don't want to loose my page with the browser i can open up multiple windows in safari
    -the calender is great
    -Fast and reliable
-The internet is the real internet(like your computer) and it doesn't use those dumb mobile versions that limit what you can do(for example Pay-pal and I'm able to transfer money to my bank account straight from the phone)
-wifi really comes in handy when I don't have my Macbook with me
-Visual Voicemail is really good for missed calls with clients it makes it really easy to retrieve messages and get right to the message.
-application store has some really good applications to help your business out.
-The auto correction really helps writing long emails/text because it predicts what your trying to say perfectly.

    Things I don't like
-battery life isn't so great(I'm a heavy user i use it for business and personal)
-apple doesn't allow you to tether the phone with the laptop
-email doesn't come Push(instantly) except Me/.Mac accounts it takes like 15 minutes or I have to go get it on other accounts. And emails are important for me and my businesses.

I say go for it you should love it. Its one of the best phones I've had. I also have huge bear paws lol and I'm able to type on it without a problem. I say if its going to be an investment that would mean it will make you money so if it makes you money then you can always get the new iphone when it comes out because your investment has paid for it. Or you can just wait till the new one comes out and then decide.

Ironic b/c I was just playing w/ the Storm and I love the push screen

We've got a Moto T501 for the car which is nice b/c w/ my Sony-Ericcson w580i I can listen to music and if needed, answer a call through the car speakers... something I would have to do an A2DP hack for the iPhone.

how many of these are free apps? I saw a neat one for tracking finances, but it was $9.99. Then again, I have to see this all from a cost/benefit point of view, not to mention I'd like to work on creating a few myself, especially after seeing the Create iPhone Apps thread.

Past experience with auto-finish/type has been bad, but I guess I'd have to see it in action w/ the iPhone.

So I can't sync it with my Macbook?

Thanks, I definitely have more to think about and at the end of the day, if it pays itself off then I can go and get the new iPhone if needed with the money saved/earned, so now it's just a question as to whether to get a new 8gb or refurb 16gb(the 4gb Nano I just sold did fine, except I had to leave off some of the comedy/e-Book material to leave room for music).

Although I'm also somewhat interested in the Bold as you said speed was an issue on BB's and it's supposedly the fastest one out there(not to mention refurbs are $249)

The phone is fully syncable with the macbook. When i said tethering i meant using it to connect to the internet whenever your not in a wifi hot spot some phones allow you to use it as a broadband modem.

Also the only Blackberry I meant was slow was the storm. The bold is a good phone from what I hear. I may pick one up to try it out. Only problem I have with the BB's is that the internet is not the full internet like on the iphone. Where can i get a refurb bold from ?

Refurb Bolds are $249 on AT&T's site, but that's the 2yr contract price.

As for the tethering, that clears it up as Adi used to have a similar phone where you could use it as a "connect card", but since the iPhone gets full internet on safari and I have a cable modem at home w/ wi-fi I probably don't need the tethering feature.
