    Default What makes a hero?

Ah yes, the hero word. It ranks up there as one of the most overly used words in our society. Baseball players, movie stars, firefighters, veterans, the guy who helps out at a crash scene, someone who bails you out jail. Pretty broad spectrum really, but what justifies this tag? It means so many different things to so many different people. I think its high time we analyze it from the fastlane perspective. We have some very intelligent and perceptive people on here. I value your opinions.

For me, its someone who doesn't have to run into burning buildings. A person who lives every day to the fullest potential they can. They give far more then they receive, and very much prefer it that way. They take adversity and work through it. Instead of complaining, they look for solutions. Its that person we all look up to, strive to be like, or use as an example to help guide our own lives. The kicker is, they don't consider themselves heros. They just feel they did what they had too.

What is a hero to you? Be as general or specific as you like.

My hero is a former student of mine who has severe health problems. This past year he tried out for mascot in 7th grade. I was so impressed. This young boy with his problems was not in the cool crowd. He knew the odds were stacked against him but he went out anyway. He certainly did something that I didn't have the guts to do at his age. Unfortunately he didn't make the cut but he's still my hero for trying.
