Hey there, i've stumbled upon an interesting article on the "doing hard things" mantra, by Scott H Young, and thought I would share it with you guys:

Do Hard Things « Scott H Young

What do you think about this kind of life philosophy? I personally find it really appealing because of the satisfaction which comes after you complete a hard challenge or acheive a hard goal, as well as because it makes it easier to push yourself to the limits.

If the challenge is difficult enough to require a minor obsession to complete, then it usually also needs to be interesting, if it has to generate the motivation to accomplish it.

I just can't bring myself to learn math nowadays. When I got into college I started with a goal in mind, to get a scholarship in the Canary Islands or in other universities from Europe, but since I love sunshine, I chose Canary Islands as my main goal. Now, after almost 3 months since I started college, I see the problem this way: I'd much rather work on my internet marketing business, make it successful and become financially independent so I can afford moving wherever I want rather than spending time doing math and getting the scholarship.

Bottom line, in my opinion, if the process is uninteresting the end goal doesn't matter. These being said, I'm still going to learn a bit of math theory just so I'll pass the exam and my parents won't have to pay for the 2nd and 3rd year of college. :)

Don't get me wrong, I like doing challenges, I ran 6 km on the treadmill today, I do it 3-4 times per week and I get close to spitting my heart every time and still I want to get to 10 km.

Thanks for the article, really interesting read. Speed++

The article is a little vague. He states in the article to "Do the hardest thing you can." While this seems like a great idea at the macro level, because most choose the easy way, I would caution not to get this confused with doing things that you don't understand!

Doing something just because it’s hard to "you" doesn’t necessarily make it worthwhile. If it’s difficult for most everyone else and you can excel with enough "hard" work then it could be worthwhile. I would ask myself what’s comes easier to me but harder to most everyone else. If you have to work hard just be average at something in any field you’re wasting your time IMHO. Focus your efforts and choose your battles wisely.

Your mind is more engaged when you focus on the more challenging goal for sure.... If I don't do that hardest things first, I stress out all day in anticipation of it.

I just want to avoid the stress so I do the hard things first.

I agree with this although the article does imply that it's important for moving the business forward.

I would also say that you should find people who PLAY at whatever that HARD work is. I try (and I stress try) to focus only on the tasks that I love doing. I hire people who love doing the things I hate and things get done a lot faster and to a higher standard. If it really is important and you're going to prove to be mediocre, then I would suggest finding some kind of outsourced person to do it (which is also hard the first time).
