I came across something today that may be of some inspiration to some of you on here! (Please, do NOT let this convince you that apps are an easy way to get rich and you need to remember that the app market was still very young when this all began.)

It's cool to read about some guys success in the news but it's very rarely that you get to see where they were before the big success.

This guy posted a new thread on this forum back in 2009 (4 years ago):
Yo! Check out my iPhone app

Friday, this was published:
Rumor: Google negotiating...

He might sell it for a billion dollars, meaning every day for the past 4 years he was hypothetically earning or being paid that figure (hence the word might in the title), he wasn't actually generating that revenue from sales.

However, the company is estimated (privately held, not publicly stated) to generate over 100mm a year ($274k/day) in revenue, the article explains their monetization strategy.

Awesome app, it allowed people with blackberry, android and iphones to all connect with ease. I think only iphone users had to pay for the app, the others can dl it for free.

Top downloaded apps are killing it in App Store, that's not a novelty, the issue is that the winner takes it all (but that's true in almost all industries)

For more inspiration, here is an article about 2 games making 700,000$ per day,

$700,000 per DAY with two mobile games. | Trey Smith Blog

The idea to see where people got their start and see them on normal forums is also something very interesting. I know two other such examples:

"Hi folks,

I created an idea for a website that has gained the interest of a private investor with deep pockets. He wants to pour a lot of money into the site and hire me to front the project for the time being.

Note that it's just a business plan at this point -- no actual product. That will be developed in the first six months.

He has offered me a percentage of the shares of the company and a reasonable wage. I have no idea if what he is offering is standard, generous, or if I'm being taken advantage of.

I'm going to hire a lawyer, but I don't know what kind of lawyer to hire.

Can anyone help give me an idea of what I should expect, of how these deals usually divide up between the idea guy/developer and the business man?

Thanks in advance, and Happy Thanksgiving!"

Here is the thread: Selling a website idea: What to expect

That was Andrew Mason, founder of groupon, IPO-ed for a couple of billions dollars, and although he got fired when the company went downhill, he probably still made a couple hundred millions at least.

Also, Markus from plentyoffish.com - online dating site, making a couple of millions dollars per month only from ads, a one man operation if you can believe it. In 2003, he was asking for seo advice on various forums.

Plenty of people started small and got big. You need some luck certain, but that's not reserved only for an elite minority. If you get something started, and you follow fastlane principles, at least you are in the game.

Awesome story. apps are getting crazy. people are getting insanely rich from this wave. I do however think it is just that, a wave, and will eventually die out.... I guess you only have to be right once though.

Thanks for sharing this. Always inspirational to hear about guys like this, and especially to see that they had their start on a forum just like any of us.

And I'm sure - to the mass media and the rest of the "99%", this guy will be a "lucky, overnight success" (event, not process)...lol

The app market is definitely something I'm looking into, my problem is I don't know how to code and program very well. The only script language I know is a small amount of JavaScript, I'm learning everyday but sometimes I feel like I'm running out of time to get those skills up.

If you have the money, outsource the work to an experienced programmer.

I saw a post earlier called "Programming is stupid", after re-evaluating I think outsourcing to someone I can trust or partnering with a programmer is the better move for now. It would take me years to get a proficient level of programming skills, by then new concepts would have been added and I'll just continue to stay way behind. So I'll just get a fundamental understanding of programming languages so I can work with programmers.

No, not at all. App's are essentially a 2nd internet boom for all of us that has missed out.

There are TON's of ideas that hasn't been done yet for apps and it is a very young market right now. Personally I'm building an app as we speak so I'm pretty excited to release it.

It is actually easier then it sounds, you can find really good developers and graphic designers from all over the world on Odesk or Elance which are the best platform for managing these kind of people. It takes a good amount of tries and skype interviews to nail them down, and find good and honest people.

Once you find good people you can get them to help you via remote desktop, on some of the simplest coding tasks in Xcode (mac and iOS development software)

I have been in the business for 1.5 years, didn't know anything about coding before, but now I can do small bits and changes, while programmers work on the big stuff.

We started creating our own games from the ground, but the time and cost of that was too much, so now we just buy good source code, "reskin" it with our own creative theme and ideas, and we publish it. Fully legal, fast and gives a good ROI, both time and money wise.

Let me know if I can help you get started somehow.
