    Wink How to Wake Up Earlier and Stay Motivated

    Hello all,

    I have almost finished the book and it's really got me pumped to start kicking some ass and providing the world with more value -- strategically. I found the motivation topic interesting and thought I'd share some methods that have been working for me lately.

    First of all, for my job I don't have to be at work until 10AM, so I have the luxury of not having to wake up super early if I don't want to. That being said, I usually try to wake up around 6:45 each day.

    My method for waking up early is as follows: try laying on your floor instead of your bed. You have to do this on your back or else it might hurt when you wake up (I've slept on my side sometimes and my shoulder is soar). I've heard studies that sleeping on a hard surface is better for your spine than the best of fancy new-technology and memory foam beds. I wouldn't recommend sleeping on straight tile if you have a tile floor, so you may need a sleeping back or those rubber gym mats. I feel more awake after sleeping on the floor and it also doesn't make me want to go back to sleep in the comfort of a plush bed. At one point I had lower back problems and I learned that it was from sleeping on a cheap-o sunk-in bed. I do a lot of studying of nutrition and health, so I hope this advice may work for you as it has for me (sometimes it's easier said than done, if I plop down on my bed and fall asleep, but I actually prefer the floor now)!

    My methods for staying motivated:

    -Multivitamins: multivitamins lately and been keeping a routine of going to the gym 2-3 times a week. The multivitamins really keep me away and I am not a coffee drinker myself so they are the next best thing. The ones I take are called "Animal Pak." They may be too serious for those who don't work out regularly, but you may still want to consider a good daily multivitamin.
    -Sauna: The sauna is amazing after a workout and especially in the morning before work (if you can afford to wake up that early). I have not been able to do this much lately but everytime I do, it really makes me feel alive! I would say sweating and going in the sauna, and then driving with your car windows down on a breezy day, is better than any drug out there -- and it's not bad for you!
    -Notes: I used to post notes all over my walls with my mantras, interesting highlights I would read in self-improvement books, and good news articles. These really kept me motivated but I feel that my memory was slipping and that I would start to ignore them over time. I was becoming like the guy in the movie "Memento." I have decided that the best method is the "vision board" or hanging up pictures of you idols or of places you'd like to visit, etc. A picture really does say a thousand words...

    I hope these help you, everyone. I know that many of these methods have been said before or you might have stumbled upon them yourself, but I hope that you can gain some new techniques from them.

    Keep rockin'!

    Hi Jonathan,

    I agree with the vitamins and exercise. You can really feel a difference when you are active and have a good diet/ vitamins. Regarding the floor, we'll see if you follow that advice when you hit your mid 30s and have a wife who is quite content with a bed (joke).

    I'm glad you found some motivation, but you're still not off the hook. Please post an intro. thread.

    Welcome and good luck in the fastlane!

    I never knew that about sleeping on the floor, but I'd really rather not, even it does mean that I could wake up earlier ha ha. I mean, a bed is a bed for a reason.

    I used to wake up at 2 o' clock in the afternoon everyday, just by being an idiot teenager, and it took me about a month to fix the habit. I wake up at 6 every morning now, regardless of the amount of sleep I had previously. It was a lot of trial and error, but what I have found to be most important is consistency.

    Make it a habit, no matter what you feel, to wake up at the same exact time every single day. Also, you could try tricking your mind into responding to an alarm clock by practicing this drill:

    At any time during the day, shut off all the lights in your room, and close your eyes. Set your alarm clock to go off in 15 minutes, and immediately wake up, and turn off the light.

    Do this again about 4-5 times for 3-4 days, and you will be a pro at waking up. I have tried this, and it really does translate into the mornings believe it or not. It's almost like the Pavlov's dog trick.

    Sorry to hi-jack your thread, it's just a great topic and useful, and it's something that I am knowledgeable in.

    Great thread!

    @littlekingaz

    The alarm-setting trick sounds interesting. You are not hijacking my thread, hah! I have had problems with setting alarms too late at night when my body is tired, as then it is too easy to convince myself to stay in it for the "long haul" aka the whole night's sleep.

    @Sparlin

    Yes, I also don't think my girlfriend would agree with sleeping on the floor, so I have to use the bed for those nights. I didn't know I was supposed to post an intro thread and will get to that pretty soon.

    I wake up at 4:30am.

    I'm up and ready to go no matter the weather, how cold it is, or how I feel.

    My motivation can be summed up in the following sentence: Failure is not an option.

    I wake up around 11 o'clock or later, but I like to stay up really, really late. I found that I am more productive late at night

    Awesome thread. I have found when i was seriously working out, eating right and giving my body supplemental nutrition that i was sleeping better as well as waking up more efficiently.

    I have heard some good things about a wake up light (also in tim ferriss new book as well) but when i asked about it to friends on facebook, some came back and said you get too used to it too quickly for the price. So i have not tried that out yet @ $140 or whatever it is a unit.

    I am interested to hear how others wake up and get motivated in the morning, i think this is a constant struggle for everyone.

    I need to start disciplining myself in regards to my time. I usually wake up at 7:30 AM to take my grandmother to work.

    But maybe I need to wake up earlier, like at 5 because I would like to read and plan out my day accordingly.

    I also would like to go to sleep later as well, because I go to sleep at around 10 PM and wouldn't mind staying up later, perhaps 12 AM, if I was doing something in regards to plans for acquiring my financial freedom/entrepreneurship.
