Is it the fact that the wealthy have access to tools and technology that make some parts of their work more efficient to take care of pushing them to take on more tasks? Or is it the idea of the economy in shambles and the foresight of it becoming worse before it gets better?

I think each part plays a significant role which in the end has increased competition among those trying to keep their job and increase their efforts to elude lost income.

This thread reminds me very much of Your Money or Your Life and the need to enjoy your wealth accordingly.

I have NO problem working long hours when it's for my betterment. I have a BIG problem working long hours for the betterment of others (JOB) or the government (TAXES).

Well, I work longer than most people I know.
There are so many great opps out there.
Why would I want to spend my days watching tv?

Do I feel pressure to work long hours?
    Sure.
These opportunities won't stick around forever.
