Woocommerce is considered the best ecommerce plugin for wordpress, I've used it and I can assure you it is nothing more than a toy compared to hosted shopping carts like big commerce. Big commerce is easy to setup and has good converting free templates built in.

Find out who holds the patent, contact them, if they are not doing anything with it ask for a licensing agreement. Even if they are doing something with it, try to act like you are bringing something lucrative to the table. You may have actually found a manufacturer at the same time. ;)
