Hello everyone! I first heard about MJ DeMarco from the SmartPassiveIncome.com podcast. In that interview, he struck me as incredibly genuine. All of his viewpoints just made so much sense. I ordered the book from Amazon, got it on Sunday, and finished it one week later, this past Sunday. I absolutely loved it! This book has already changed my way of thinking, and I know it will have a huge impact on my life. For that, I thank you MJ!
I've lived life on both the sidewalk and the slow lane, and I am ready to get into the fast lane. When I went to college, I was a sidewalker for sure. My parents gave me $150 a week, and every week I would spend every penny when my only necessities were groceries for 1 meal a day during the week. On top of that, my credit card was constantly maxed. Luckily it was a crappy student card with a $500 limit. I had no plan for money, and almost never even thought about what I was buying.
Once I was out on my own, reality hit, and I finally learned how to manage money. I shared a townhouse and had to make my own way with a part time job pulling and shipping inventory for my boss' eBay store. At first I made pretty good money, but the business slowed, and on top of that I met a girl. I quickly realized that if I wanted to keep her, I'd have to get my butt in gear.
So I had a dead end job, I was overweight, and I smoked. I put my energy into finding a job, and I finally did. I'm now an IT Analyst for a small/medium HVAC distributor. Everything was peachy, til I went to the doctor and got weighed. Work offered my $1000 if I quit smoking for a year, so I took them up on it and have been cigarette free since. I've also turned my health around with light exercise and eating a Paleo diet (meat and veggies, yum!) I'm down 53 pounds so far!
And the girl that started this all? She's my fiance now. Right now we're riding the slow lane. We've got budgets set up, we're very frugal, and saving as much as we can for the wedding.
When I was in school, I always said that I wanted to start my own business when I got out of school. I'm glad that didn't pan out, because I definitely wasn't ready then. My dad has had side businesses his whole life. Nothing fast lane, but it allowed him to live very comfortably while working at the post office for his main job. So I've had the itch my whole life to start something of my own. Now, I have the right mindset.
I already have 3 ideas. One for sure is fast lane, and it sticks to the 5 commandments. There's a definite need, and I've found 1 big competitor so far. The size of the competitor makes me a little weary, as they seem to have a LOT of financial backing, but hey, there's got to be room for one more. My next step is to send traffic to a dummy page to see if I really can compete, and also give me some insight into good keywords.
So there's my story so far. I make an entry level salary, but I've also got a mortgage and a wedding to plan for. My budget is cut down to the bare bones to open cash flow, and I did rent 2 rooms in my house for a while, so I have a few thousand to put into this.
Thanks for reading, I hope I can learn and also share as I go along in my new path in life.
