    Default My iPhone App Journey

I originally posted about releasing my first iPhone app in another thread "App Guerrilla-My Fastlane" because it is part of my long term "fastlane plan". I decided to start this thread to expand with more details about my app release and provide better exposure for those looking for more information about releasing an iPhone app. I hope to shed some light on what it is like going through this process, keep myself accountable, and help others with my experience. So here is a short intro and my journey thus far--

I am 21 years old, married to an amazingly supportive wife, and live in a small town in Alabama. I recently read the Fastlane, read App Empire, and put the wheels into motion in creating my first app. I narrowed my ideas down to 2 or 3 and chose the least complicated and contacted a few different developers. Luckily I found an affordable and local app development group state side and we agreed upon a price for making my app. The development process went pretty smoothly. I explained my idea, sent hand sketched wireframes, and they began developing my app the next day. They did a superb job in translating my idea into the app and it turned out even better than I expected.

My app is called "DogCap-Capturing Your Dog's Thoughts on Camera". With my app you take a picture of your dog and it displays a random and dog-themed caption with which you can share via Twitter or Facebook. It's a simple idea, but there seems to be a trend forming with captioning and meme apps. "I'd Cap That" is hugely popular on iOS and the function of my app is very similar--I just made my captions, font, and graphics geared towards dogs. I'm not expecting to make millions of this app, but rather just gain the experience and hopefully turn some sort of profit for more projects in this area. I made the app as a $0.99 download based mainly on people's willingness to pay for an app that has a novelty function (Ugly Meter, Pet Translator, I'd Cap That+) and the passion that dog lovers have for dog themed products.

A little over a week ago we submitted the app for review and after 9 days my app was processed and released yesterday. Shortly after it went live I updated my app's Facebook and Twitter pages and friends, family, and social media followers attempted to download the app. It wasn't long until I received messages from various people explaining that when they went to purchase the app they received an error message saying "the app you tried to buy is no longer available" . This was something I was definitely not expecting! I had no idea how to fix the problem, but eventually I figured out I needed to call Developer Support to report the issue...and of course, Developer Support was closed yesterday for the holiday I finally was able to report the problem this morning and after posting in the iPhone Developer Forum I now know that it is a widespread App Store problem affecting newly released apps. It is very disappointing considering I had developed a plan of attack for the launch of my app including social media, blog agreements, review submissions, press releases, etc. Pretty much I am now just waiting to hear back from developer support to know that they have resolved the issue so I can begin promoting my app. I am trying not to get discouraged at this point, but its pretty maddening to know that I have people who are hitting the "Buy" button, but are unable to do so (I guess this highlights that the app store is still a form of hitch-hiking) I've learned a lot so far and if you would like to look into what I have been able to do with my app and promotion for my app just check out the links below. I plan on tracking my progress on this thread and updating with any useful information.

I have had a great time branding the app via Twitter and Facebook. I currently have about 300 targeted Twitter Followers and close to 40 Facebook Likes. Nothing earth-shattering, but out of the 300 Twitter followers I have had around 10 different followers contact me directly asking when they could download the app and then a dog blogger who also contacted me directly bc she is interested in featuring my app for her 15,000 followers!

    DogCap Twitter
    DogCap Facebook

I had to learn WordPress rather quickly to make my app website. I am happy the way it turned out and think that WordPress is pretty much a miracle worker for the non-programmer type like me.

Good progress. Keep us updated. I figured you lived in NC with that user name. I lived in Chapel Hill for about 1 1/2 years.

Man, I'm waiting for my first app to be approved. It has been 4 days now,
It is a simple game, will need to start marketing it though.

I am a die-hard UNC Tarheels basketball fan living in the state of Alabama...kinda weird I guess, haha. I've actually never been to Chapel Hill, it's on my list of things to do once I'm in the "Fastlane".

It took 9 days for mine to be reviewed and then approved. Good luck with your app!

I spent under $1000. I found a local start up that was looking to expand their portfolio. If I had went elsewhere state side I probably would've been looking at paying 2-3x that.

    Update: 7-7-12

Thankfully now the app store issue has been fixed!!

I have no idea how many downloads I lost during the down time, but my downloads went from (2) all day on the 5th to (20) yesterday when it was fixed after lunch. I spent most of yesterday and this morning sending out emails to bloggers and review sites. I've got my fingers crossed on those!

I had a couple of wins last night with Twitter. A dog blogger with almost 15K followers reviewed and recommended my app via Twitter. Also I had some others tweet about how much they enjoyed the app. It's great to be getting good feedback, but I have to convert the enthusiasm into more downloads.

I posted one of the photos taken with my app to Reddit and it is now #1 in the TrollingAnimals category! The photo is linked to imgur where I have a link to my app. Hopefully this will create some sort of viral quality to the app that I can capitalize with.

    Update 7-8-12

I've not heard anything back from the app review sites and tech journalists that I emailed. Considering I sent them on the weekend I've not really given up on them just yet, maybe I will have a surprise in my inbox Monday

One thing I have learned during the process of making my first app, is the importance that Twitter can be as a marketing tool. I have made several connections through Twitter and can attribute the little success I have had to that. The promotion my app received from the dog blogger that tweeted about my app actually boosted sales for that day!

    Update 7-10-12

Well good thing I didn't give up on the cold call emails! I actually had one respond. It was another dog blogger who thanked me for reaching out to her with my app and that she would definitely take a look at it. Also, had another blogger download my app and contact ME to say that she planned on including my app in one of her upcoming posts!

I know I'm not hitting home runs, but if I can base hit myself to hit my goal (make my money back) then I will consider it a success
Speaking of homeruns... I did tweet Oprah and asked her to check it out.. LOL. I have been having some fun with some Twitter contest. I've been giving away free Postagrams of peoples' pets in Retweet contests. I've spent $0.00 (received 5 free for signing up) and gained several targeted followers and new users for my app by doing this. It's a perfect contest giveaway for me because I can look big by saying "I will send a photo print of your pet to ANYWHERE in the world!" Actually sent one to a guy who owns a Pit Bull Rescue in United Kingdom yesterday!

Also, I have a few more promo codes left for the verison 1.0 of my app DogCap-Your Dog's Thoughts on Camera. If you would like to try it out for free and give me a good review then send me a PM

Good idea. I just told Tom cruise to check out my app. Thought he may want to use it to screenshot sms conversations.

Jake - great idea for a first app! Our first app was a dog / puppy related app as well. Apple will make you crazy with the delays though, we've had to learn to be very very patient...

Can u explain why you needed to invest money for your app if you are the builder?

Tarheelfan is the OP who made the Dog app. I'm just a spectator on his app journey.

    Update 7-11-12

Downloads dipped a little bit yesterday, but still on track thankfully. I finished up a promotional video of my app yesterday.. it includes some user submitted photos, reviews, and a look inside the app. It isn't the most professional video in the world, but it was worth a shot. It's more of a "hype" video than anything.

Also, had my PrMac press release go live and very happy with the way it looks. It helped boost visibility of my app through Google search so it was worth the time.

    Update 7-12-12

Downloads holding steady after a week. I'm not blowing it out of the water, but I am still on track to hit my goal! My app now has 16 Five Star Reviews so it is pretty disappointing that in a few days they will disappear due to the update I am rolling out.

GREAT NEWS is that I had my app featured by a popular dog blogger! You can check it out here... Fun new App for Dog Lovers....DogCap

Thanks!! And thanks for the encouragement! I have been trying to bust my butt on Twitter because that has landed me about 90% of my downloads probably. Thankfully I am truly a dog lover so it makes it a lot easier spending so much time there tweeting to other dog lovers. 500 targeted followers now! Woo hoo!

I did take notice that Mike39 used a $50 Free Facebook ads campaign and grabbed the same deal from my hosting (Bluehost). The results yesterday blew my mind! I had around 40 Facebook Likes on my page yesterday and this morning I woke up to 86!! 32 of those Likes came directly from the ads. It is WAAAY above what I was expecting from the TOTAL campaign which I have scheduled for 5 days at the rate of a $10 dollar limit per day. Hopefully some of those likes will convert to downloads!! I have the campaign targeted at ages 13-35 Male/Female who like dogs living US,UK, or Canada (my three most downloaded countries from the app store)

Does apple cancel many orders? Google rejects attempted purchases very frequently. A lot more than I thought possible.

No, cancellations really hasn't been an issue for me. I would definitely Google that (if you haven't already) to find out what number of cancellations is "normal"...just to make sure you aren't running up against some kind of app store bug.

I thought Apple was "perfect" and "bug free" and it cost me pretty big on release day since I wasn't prepared to handle any hiccups on the release day or how to respond to customer complaints.

    Update 6-17-12

So...after two weeks I have reached my first milestone goal: 100 Paid Downloads! I know that may not seem like much, but considering that this is my first attempt at a potentially-fastlane business it is nice to see the first dollars being made in my 'Fastlane Account'. I had to straight up hustle to get those downloads so it makes it that much sweeter in my eyes. The past few weeks have been a blur, so I am going to try to list some accomplishments and what I am doing currently to promote the app. Let me know if you see something I'm not doing or something I could be doing better to boost my app.

    App Store
    - I actually have an app in the App Store
    - 18 Five Star Reviews in the App Store
    - 100 Downloads

    Social Media
-Went from 0 to 600 targeted twitter followers in 3 weeks.
-Went from 0 to 246 targeted Facebook Likes in 3 weeks. (via Organic, Viral, and Facebook Ads)
-Over 100 Followers on Instagram (just opened account a few days ago)

-App featured on 2 blogs (PetBookLadyBlog.com and FluffyPopcorn.com)

I am still having most of my downloads, if not all of my downloads originating from conversions via Twitter (and now Instagram). My keywords have really not produced much and that has been disappointing. I changed the keywords around in an update to go live in the next few days so hopefully that will fix that issue.

And if you have been tracking this thread and have any suggestions on how I can increase my exposure past what I am doing then it would be extremely appreciated!!

Oh..and I'm still waiting for Oprah and The Ellen Show to tweet me back to let me know they are going to feature my app...
