Default Pick Your Niche For Lead Generation: Industry Consolidation, SEO

I had started out building 20 sites at a time for a trade+city in a few lead gen niches. I do find that Google places gets in the way. However, if you have a very strong website, it could rank above places sometimes as limos.com does.

I am thinking of consolidating all these local sites and focusing just on one mega site with all the authority and cities. The network sites would be more of a feeder.

As I am doing research to see if I want to dig deeper. I remember MJ said something about getting into industry that's less consolidated and more small business. I wonder way there are so many niches that are left untouched by consolidation. Things like specific contractor trades (not service magic, that's a joke): plumber, pest control, handyman etc..

I also think that for a good opportunity now, is to consolidate an industry that has less competitive SEO. Limo companies don't do nearly as much SEO as say plumbers. It's easier entry, but the end of the day it's all about execution.

I'd love to get some feedback on the members thoughts here.

My guess was that MJ was saying less consolidation and smaller businesses are better because they don't have the brand identity that larger companies have. Basically, my thinking is the larger companies will feel less of a need for a lead generation service. But on the other hand, the small businesses will like this because they can't afford the brand building these other businesses engage in.

Curious as to why you think ServiceMagic is a joke? Are you saying there should be a site dedicated to each niche like plumbers only or for some other reason?

I think there is a tradeoff here. Some niches that don't do as much SEO or advertising may be harder to convince to use your services than those who are already spending money on advertising or trying to rank with SEO. I think the key is just to have some other ways to drive traffic in case you can't get as high on the pages as you would like with SEO.
