Why are you trying to learn web design?

You can outsource a good designer fairly cheaply.

    Cool

There are a lot of free resources online that don't require registration or subscription to learn. I thought I would put together a small resource for you. I've included HTML, CSS, PHP, and a few others. With these as a jumping off point a person who does their due diligence will be able to learn what they need to in a relatively expedient manner.

w3schools - HTML, browser scripting, XML, server scripting, etc.
    HTML.net - HTML, PHP, CSS
HTML Goodies - HTML, scripting, etc.

These websites should stand up your basic knowledge and provide a solid foundation to build on.

A quick google will reveal more than enough resources.

also when you run into problems, its well worth stopping by IRC channels such as PHP Freaks
    PHPFreaks Web IRC (qwebirc)

a simple 2 minute Q&A could save you a ton of time trying to find out the problem with google. Having a 2nd pair of eyes is sometimes priceless, and often its a simple typoe, or a rule that was never stated on the learning resource , for example i just found out i couldn't use any shift modifiers in my passwords with mysql ... If it were not for a quick email, i would never of thought that to be the problem, and would still be looking at my code.

Smashing Magazine has a TON of good design resources.

You'll have to poke around a bit to find things...

Then I guess the real question is,
Why are you wasting everyone's time by asking such a question?

Reading the most recent posts on this forum would give you the answer.
And if you couldn't muster the gumption for that, a simple google search would have given you plenty of resources.

I think your time would be better spent "investing" in the "valuable skill" of your own resourcefulness.

TheNewBoston – Free Educational Video Tutorials on Computer Programming and More!you guys wanting to learn programming or design i highly highly recommend thenewboston. This guy bucky has a ton of awsome tutorials on a ton of different things from beginning to advanced. Ive seen alot of people on forums recommend codeacademy and teamtreehouse but in my opinion the new boston blows them out of the water. check it out.

oh yeah and im not affiliated with them or anything and i really wouldnt recommend learning it to a real professional level either. Learn enough to know what to look for in hiring a real designer or programmer. Alot of people think they are going to be awsome and be able to design or code at a professional level in a couple months but thats really not the case. To be as good of a coder as someone thats been coding 5 years you will probably have to code for, you guessed it...5 years. Ofcoiurse there are exceptions, but dont rely on that.

    Specifically web design?

An installation of Worpress or Joomla, a nice free or paid theme and Gimp do design a logo. Change some colors and employ some widgets. That is your web design hurdle now if you are doing your own site.

If you are asking because you want to sell design services it's better to concentrate on php skills to start creating and selling paid themes rather then entire sites.
