You will always have competition in business. Most new products or businesses are a "better" version of an existing one.
You only fail if you you don't try.
I came up with a brilliant social networking site for pickup basketball. I started building the site on Intuit websites right away. After one month I had the site working for one city and was ready to start promoting the site only to find out that there is a site called infinitehoops created by a software engineer. His site is in every city in the U.S. and even around the world he also has a mobile app. I have absolutely no computer experience and there is no way I can compete on that level with this site. The only thing that makes me want to keep tying is Infinatehoops is boring. The site is drab and mechanical. My site was called Hoophookups.com and as soon as I discovered Infinitehoops, I cancelled my site. I can reinstate it in the morning and I think I will because I feel I gave up too easy. My question for the forum is this: Should I attempt to compete w/this site because this guy is a software programmer and it would take me years to learn what he knows or should I chalk this one up as a loss?

atleast give it your best effort. You shot yourself down before you got out of the gate! How can you even determined that the market isnt crying for a different less boring site?

of course you can compete. Wal-mart was around before target. My space was around before Facebook. Specially if you think you can do it better. Wish you the best keep us posted.
Build it better and user friendly. There is always a better way. What is the competition lacking? Fill those holes. But first, determine is the demand is there for your efforts. Meaning are there people really using these sites to meetup at a high demand?
