Personally, I don't like the change and it doesn't make sense to me, but maybe they have some data that supports the move, and a brand rebuild underway and it all fits in.

I just saw an infomercial/commercial for overstock.com. They mentioned their new web address is now "www.o.co"
Is this a good idea? To go from .com to .co or .net just to get a shorter domain? I thought they already had a great domain and was well established.

Agree! From at SEO perspective it makes no sense at all. The domain name gives high page-ranking especially if the word is made-up och a combination of multiple words. Try searching for "o" and "overstock" in google. Furthermore your brand gets stronger each time someone writes it or sees it written.
o.co can bee powerful if you get it out and well known. But I would keep the longer name as the main domain.

Yeah I am no SEO expert but from what I know its not a good idea. But we'll see...maybe they do have a well thought out marketing plan.
Looks to me like change from very good to very bad.
In fact, I don't like the whole .CO idea - so ugly and without purpose. COM is king.

I agree. This change is a mistake on several different fronts IMHO. It would be interesting to know what their reasoning was. Whatever it was, they didn't take SEO into account. That's for sure.
Owning the .co version of your domain makes sure that people who accidently leave out the m at the end still go to your site. Apparently a tiny percentage of people do this on a daily basis; I've done it as well and often times the people who own the .com version don't own the .co version so they lose traffic to potential competitors or to people who just park a page and put links on it to generate revenue.
Overstock.com is easier to remember and rolls more smoothly off the tongue than o.co in my opinion. But, if that's what they want, we'll see how it works out for them.
I thought that and bought a bunch of .co's for that very reason. Then google created auto correct.
R.I.P 500 USD worth of .co domains
You misunderstood the commercial.
More likely they have introduced a shortened version of their main domain. Many sites are doing this just so people can more easily share their links on Twitter with it's 140 character restrictions.
If you go to Overstock.com it doesn't redirect to o.co, but o.co does redirect to Overstock.com which means they haven't changed it, they have just added o.co to use in commercials thinking it will be easier for people to share and also, and this is a BIG ONE, to tap in from their phones.

No they have not "just added o.co to use in commercials". The statement below is from their site. They are changing their company name. But I am not sure if they will eventually make o.co their main web domain and have overstock.com redirect to o.co.
"Why Overstock.com Became O.co
When we first started our business nearly twelve years ago we only sold surplus inventory, yet we are now no longer just an online liquidator. Our current offerings span from furniture and home decor to cars, vacations and insurance. We want an identity that more accurately reflects our company as it has evolved: Hence 'O.co,.' Our customers have long associated 'O' with Overstock.com, which is making the transition to O.co seamless. O.co still carries all of the same products, has award winning customer service, has the same $2.95 or lower national shipping and customized shopping features. Globally, we are synonymous with the 'O,' making this a natural transition of our brand to a universally understandable and relevant domain. We now have a shorter name, but we still have the same big savings.
