Default Should I have an affiliate program?

I'm going to be launching a new site soon and I'm torn over whether or not I should have an affiliate program. On one hand it will open the door to having an army of people promoting my site but on the other hand, it adds a layer of complexity and I'm not sure I want a bunch of people spamming my site on forums and crap like that. But still... one or two whales would be nice... The site will have recurring sales so affiliates would be able to make pretty good money with it.

    What do you guys think?

Seeing as I am an affiliate manager for one of the largest SaaS companies in the internet marketing niche I can say that you MUST have an affiliate program. It is simply the easiest way to acquire customers without massive cash outlays. Think of it as paid beta testing to continue to refine your sales funnel before you put your own cash on the line.

In addition if you don't have an affiliate program, it lends an air of illegitimacy to your product as any reputable product or organization out there has one. Given the simple affiliate management software (infusion, ultracart, 1shoppingcart, etc.) there isn't any reason not to have one. You can even only offer payment through paypal to make disbursements quick, and easy.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate your reply. I think you are right. I've been struggling with this for a long time and in the next few days I have to pull the trigger. I have a way to do it easily, I just have a nagging weird feeling about it.

Here it is. The tour isn't done yet but the rest of the site is. Mostly. It will be live by Monday.

    Video Computer Lessons

Pretty much it is a bunch of videos designed to help seniors learn how to use their computers.

Logo sucks I know, working on it.

Definitely get an affiliate program in place. You will be glad that you did. It opens so many doors to more opportunity to work with others and very well get into other projects.

    Good Luck!

As Jon says, I am here to help if I can.

That's the idea. They are the fastest growing group of internet users and contrary to popular belief, as a group they have lots and lots of money. I got the idea for the site after watching my grandpa and others try to use their computers and I quickly realized that books and help files are worthless, they need to be shown what to do.

In my off-topic opinion: Market to seniors offline, market to family online. Since your lessons link is broken, I have to ask you one very important question that would sway my decision as a non-senior: Do you teach them how to recognize when their computer is infected, phishing schemes, and other security risks?

Do you show what a random IM on AOL sent by a spambot looks like?
Automation is important. This is an automated disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, all advice is opinion, and I will not be held accountable for other peoples stupidity.

I'm still working on the tour so none of the links will work until Monday.

But yes, I do have an internet security section. Whenever I get something weird in my email, I make a video and tell them why it is a scam. I have several common scams covered with more added frequently.

I haven't made the IM videos yet, those will be added later. I don't use AIM much so it was put on the back burner. Coming soon though.

The only thing I can't do is show them what an infected computer looks like because to do that I'd have to infect my computer. I'm not really sure how to get around that. Having said that, I do have videos that show them how to install and run AVG and Windows Defender. I have more stuff too I can't recall offhand.

You definitely need IM videos. What elderly person wants to get a computer without knowing how to talk to their grandkids / friends / Church ministers on it?

Infecting your computer is easy, but I would never suggest to do it with your work computer! Get a test machine. It shouldn't be hard to find a 5-8 year old computer that's in working order on the cheap (Pay no more than $30 for the brick.), or if that's too much hassle, order the cheapest hard drive you can find. Pop it in, install windows, disable it's security and float around on IE, javascript enabled. You'll be infected within 20 minutes. If you're still having trouble, download every small executable on limewire or something and run them.

Yeah you are right about the IM part, I'll have to get those done ASAP.

I might have a crappy computer around here I could infect... I might have scavenged them for parts, I don't remember.

Or --- Maybe I could find someone in town with an infected computer. I could fix it for free in exchange for them letting me use it for the video.

    Thanks for the advice,

    Rich
