Default should I pay a pro??

I have finally scribbled on paper long enough to come up with a unique idea for a website I'd like to start.
Would the experienced e-biz people here suggest that I work alongside a web design pro to develop the site, or take the time to learn how it's done... and do it myself? I ask because I've read stories of people that finally made it big from their site, but seems they built it themself.

    What are your goals?

How does the website fit into your PLAN/your future?

What do you hope to accomplish w/the website? What is your timeline?

I'll be honest, I came to this site excited about learning more about investing in real estate. The more I read about people achieving huge success via the internet, the more curious I've been about it. Since real estate was my ultimate goal, I'm trying to stay focused on that. I see an e-commerce site as a way to raise capital for my real estate venture.
I'm not sure if this is far fetched, but my goal with this site would be to take me out of the rat race. I would like to earn my monthly expenses with this site (which isn't much, I only have a house payment and two mouths to feed... no other debts).
The website would be a stepping stone for me to my ultimate goal of apartment investing.
Since I don't have much education on either web design, or real estate... I'm not sure how to set a realistic timeline. I am hoping to have the site running by August, and after it's been running 12 months, quit my job.

I realize I'm kinda scatter brained. I'm not near as focused as I want/need to be. I'm reading through your "How to Develop your Plan" thread.

Become focused. You can become focused by knowing what you really want and loving it. Do you want to go into E-Business just because you've heard other people got successful in this field?

    If yes, read this.

Now to answer your question: It's generally better to hire a pro because this can save you time AND money (on the long run). Not to mention that the site will look better that way and there's a lower chance of technical errors in my opinion.
But even if you hire a pro you really have to know what you want or the pro won't know what he has to do and the result will look different from what you expect.

Anyway - good luck with that and if you have any questions feel free to ask of course!

It depends on what type of site you want to create. If it is an ecommerce site there are scripts that you could buy that would give you most of your functionality and then you could hire someone to do the tweaks that you want. I believe biophase mentioned some ecommerce software that he likes on the boards or on his blog www.livelearninvest.com

If you are creating a site that no one has created before then you will probably want to work with a pro as it will take a while to learn programming.

For the graphics for the site I would suggest you put a design contest on 99 designs. You can then pay someone to code the graphics in css/html to work on your site.

To all of the above, thank you very much. I appreciate all the advice, and resources. I'm getting my plan put together in a more organized and focused fashion. I'll post when I have the ball rollin'.

I began my new life as a RE investor. I kept wandering about the internet. Someone here, sorry I forgot who, referred to the internet as undeveloped real estate and it all clicked. You can buy your own little corner of the internet and set up shop with little or no fuss. No bank approvals, no appraisals, no lender docs. Once you have your internet corner then you can develop it and refine it. Great analogy.

Here is another thread that you can get additional answers regarding learning the information yourself.
    http://www.thefastlanetomillions.com...earn-code.html

One other thing worth mentioning: If the skill that you need to learn to reach this goal is a skill that you will need for future projects then it may be worth the time to learn and apply. Like most things, the more you do something, the better you become. So, if you will need the skills later, you may as well get to investing the time now to learn it.

I also highly recommend getting in contact with Andviv and discuss your needs. He is the professional in this area and will be able to lead you to making the best decision for YOUR needs.

That analogy just woke me up. It'll keep my brain working for the rest of my shift tonight, thanks!
