    Default Promo magnet, anyone?

So I just read an article at Marketing Sherpa found here:

    http://www.marketingsherpa.com/article.html?id=30512

It's about how fridge magnets are a great repeat business tool for niche market retailers. I have considered magnets some times and decided they are just more garbage polluting the earth.

I actually got excited about those little computer screen cleaners. I figured I would actually keep that one as it would be useful. But then I decided that my biz is no plastics, so how could I be giving out a plastic promo item?!

Does anyone have any experience with repeat online sales increasing because of promo items? Do you keep magnets? would you prefer a screeen cleaner?

    Thanks,

Maybe a pencil is better? (I was about to say pens but hey, no plastic, right?)
    Or a coffee cup?

In any case, I do use them (that's how I "remember" who my AC or water heater guy is).

In another topic, in your website I noticed a couple of "weird" words. I suggest you link them to wikipedia so people can read more about them (like endometriosis and plasticizers)

Ya, a I can see where you wouldn't want to do a plastic promo item.... given your whole premise is no plastic in the kitchen!

I don't like this topic - - - I always 'felt like' I should do a promo item, but never really saw difinitive results....

Having said that, if I were going to do a promo item - I would definately want it to be something useful.

Since you are selling kitchen stuff, something used in the kitchen would make sense!

I really like the coffee cup idea.
    Apron
    Dishcloth
    Rolling pin cover

They are all more expensive promo items, but my brain is having trouble thinking...

I'll come back if I think of more.

well with 4 kids, we take all the promo stuff we can get our hands on, free toys and all. Anyway, here are the best two things that we got about 5 years ago, and it are still around.

    1. a logod mini dry erase board for the fridge with magnet, we use this for writing shopping lists items when we think of them(not sure if this is plastic or not)

    2. even better- a dry erase marker holder. it is a small magnet, and glued to that magnet is a little wire stick figure with a skirt on it, and the arms come around and hug the marker. Fantastic, not sure if the maker patented it or not, and it is not logoed, but it works very well with the logo dry erase board.

How about designing an oven mit promo item. Its not plastic and its always going to be used by the cook or cooks in the house.

    just thought, logoed corkscrew.

also, ceramic magnets would be a possibility.

    logoed mini meat thermometer.

is your site anti rubber as well? if not, one of those rubbered jar openers.- these last about a year at our house.

wooden spoons with your website burned into the handle- might be expensive

that is all I have for now

We used them and found they worked well. Perhaps because of the nature of our business. Our business was a service business. Our customers were seniors, some who could not remember what our name was, what our phone number was, or even where they left our business cards. By the nature of our business, the customers were repeat customers who needed to contact us on a monthly (or at least 90 day) interval. Many times sooner to check their order status, etc... We had business card size fridge magnets made and would give them to all of our customers. They found them very usefull. In our case, the magnets served a specific purpose (reminder, handy contact info) as well as advertised our services to anyone who saw them in their homes.

My thoughts are that fridge magnets work out best for repeat service type businesses. I even have (and use) several on my own fridge. I have one for the company who delivers oil to my home, my accountant, dentist, etc... Those are the type I keep.

Perhaps a usefull type (inexpensive) product which you can send to your loyal customers (or as a premium; for a certain order size, etc..) which has your business name, slogan, and phone number printed on it. Such as a brushed stainless steel bottle opener.

    Very best regards,
    Bob Poulin

I love those magnets, for repeat business uses where I need the # quick, as RJP mentioned. I.e. Costco pizza; that magnet has come in handy many many times

After clicking over to your site, what immediately came to mind was a small, branded, wooden spoon keychain. I realize you don't sell spoons, but to me it says kitchen(ware), it's biodegradable, and a neat keychain seems to be one of those items that people tend to actually use, like pens and cups. Added bonus: as it's an out of the ordinary keychain, it may help to bring in more customers when those with it pull their keys out in public; say at a grocery store that has one of those little keychain points rewards cards, and others ask where they got the cool little spoon from . . .

I like my New Belgium beer glasses. The local breweries give away the glasses free at many of the local liquor stores. Bottle openers work as well.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I'll make sure to keep you posted.
I am just now wondering if this sounds like a summer project for my kids. Homemade promo items! I'm sure they be thrilled LOL

I am also happy to have posted a thread that more than 3 people responded to. Who knew!

I like the magnets and coffee cup idea. The rubber jar opener is good too.

Also note that it should be "Stainless Steel Bottles". Not "Stainless Steal Bottles".

Thanks Z5 films for pointing out the typo! So embarrassing... speed+

I just found 3 items that would work:

    - screen cleaner (made of recycled plastic)
    - corrugated fridge magnet (cardboard looking)
    - jar opener (made of tires)

Which one do you like better?

They all look good. I might just decide based on price or maybe the jar opener because it has more space for the name and logo, which is pretty long.

    Thanks for your input!

I like the fridge magnet idea best for promotion. If they put it on the fridge, it will get the most exposure. The others will sit in a drawer.

I agree. Every time they pass the fridge, it will subconsciously become more and more engraved in their minds.
