This is a scary statistic and we are a 2/3 consumer-driven economy, consider that for a moment too.

Well the system doesn't really reward savers, only spenders, in fact it ruins savers (with inflation).

With "healthcare" "insurance" they don't have to spend their savings in a health emergency (or so they think), so of course they spend it all (a lot of them don't have much left if anything after the costs each month).

Having them dependent on the job to pay off their lifestyle and commitments makes people just a tee bit more controllable as well.

People respond to punishment and incentives - at least the ones up till now.
They do what they do because everyone else, they see, is doing it too. The American hunting tribes, for example, whose organization so puzzled our observers, never formed a State, for there is no way to reduce a hunter to economic dependence and make him hunt for you.

Yeah but you can be sure that that household has an iPad an iPhone and a Macbook.

    That is sad to me.

But seeing as how 48% get govt assistance that figure shouldn't be too much of a surprise I guess.

I followed the links and read the articles. Several problems I have with this.

    1) They keep saying "A new study...." I have not seen any references for what study or where it came from.

    2) I would be more inclined to believe it if they said 64% of American households have less than $1000. By just saying Americans you are including, individually, all those Americans under 18. I would expect a very small percentage of minors to have $1000.

    3) Same problem with the $75,000 debt. This isn't surprising to me as many homeowners have mortgages over $75k.

Until I see the report, I am not liking the way this data is presented.
