Absolutely. I dont think that everything is necessarily black and white.
I like to question things, instead of taking what i'm told for granted whether it be "piracy is bad" or "a good college degree will land you a good job".
Infact, youve reminded me of an excellent essay (one of many) by Paul Graham, a definite fastlaner, about thinking outside the box, thinking for yourself, questioning authority and cultural taboos etc.
What You Can't Say
EDIT: Infact he does have a few things to say about piracy
"[2] Copyright owners tend to focus on the aspect they see of piracy, which is the lost revenue. They therefore think what drives users to do it is the desire to get something for free. But iTunes shows that people will pay for stuff online, if you make it easy. A significant component of piracy is simply that it offers a better user experience." - http://www.paulgraham.com/convergence.html
He has a lot of valid points worth thinking about if open-minded enough to consider alternative viewpoints. Im sure Graham can articulate them better than I can.
P.S I explicitly stated so i wasnt justifying it. Also stated I was firmly against scamming people.
Thats a fallicy and not true.
Fact is, its sharing, not stealing. More akin to lending your copy to your wife or to a friend.
If someone downloaded a pdf, they havnt created scarcity, i.e. there isnt one less pdf out there.
Im not defending the action- just expressing the truth of the matter.
EDIT:
"Real property is tangible and limited in supply. Intellectual property is formless and unlimited in supply. According to Mark Lemley, a Stanford Law School copyright expert, copyright infringement is not the same kind of theft as the physical taking of a CD from a store. He also states that "if I take your physical property, I have it and you no longer do. If I copy your song, I have it, but so do you." Lemley suggests that the music industry's use of metaphors have backfired. However, he says copyright infringement is wrong and should be punished. But, simplistic statements of it being just like stealing a CD are wrong and counterproductive because even though people know it is wrong they are likely to ignore this fact (Healey, 2008). The use of metaphors in the debate over downloading music provides a tipping point for either side."- http://voices.yahoo.com/is-file-shar...s-1441563.html
They do what they do because everyone else, they see, is doing it too. The American hunting tribes, for example, whose organization so puzzled our observers, never formed a State, for there is no way to reduce a hunter to economic dependence and make him hunt for you.
