Exclamation What to do with my list??

Hello all, I am currently designing a website and it is in the final stages of refining before she goes live , this is not really a fastlane business because it is not scalable (site is about local area content) but it should bring in a nice passive income to help me launch something with more potential growth. The question in my head now has been: What can i do to monetize the email list of local business and residents that I will be collecting? I'm sure there are options but I am not very experienced with the email list world. I know I can keep them and use them as a primary customer base, but can I sell them off to other companies? Or what other options could I capitalize on?

    Thanks in advance,
    -Mike

Don't have much idea of what your website will be, but you could create services for businesses and send them weekly offers, or talk to businesses to send you offers or products and sell them through your email list. Not sure if this could work for your website.

My site is a local directory/listings site for businesses, I make money off of ad space and upgraded listings. I was looking to optimize profits by incorporating the list of local resident's emails in some way. Right now, I am leaning towards creating a 2nd email account separate from my site and giving businesses the "opportunity" to send an email advertisement or special offer for their product/service through my list. This way I'm not giving away my hard earned email addresses while still allowing companies to reach out directly to local resident specific markets! Some may call it spam but I call it profitable interests, is this legal??

Nice idea. I dont know if this would work but maybe you could take the list and divide into businesses that paid for upgraded listings and businesses that did not. Then sell the list of businesses that paid of upgraded listings to a company that does SEO for small businesses or something like that, because if the business paid for a listing, then they probably have an internet marketing budget and are internet savvy

Mike39: Initially you could publish local news and offer your users to suscribe to (weekly?) newsletters. Then you offer businesses to advertise on your email lists. Smashingmagazine.com does this in their email newsletters and is not too much obtrusive.

Before monetizing give users a motif to give their emails.

@Tronik Thanks! that's a great idea, I hadn't even thought about the business emails, just the personal addresses, will definitely consider it!

@tincho1492 Thank you as well, this is another great idea, I think I could incorporate that into my operation without it taking up much time and it would be a lot more appealing to both advertisers and site-goers! Cool!

    Both of you:
