If you are good at managing your time and people, you can do 50 things at once..
Sadly most people fail when they have to do more than one thing at a time.
So if you can do it, why not..

I am typing this post to ask for opinions on what I should do. I am currently involved in a very large project. I am overseeing the development for a new social network, marketing, and everything else. The project is expensive, complex, and I will need to do a lot of leg work to get the name out there.
Now here is the issue. I thought of another idea. The idea is extremely simple. I thought of a way to turn the iphone and other smart phones (eventually) into a tool that can produce the the user at least 3K per year by using my product. My profit projections for a stable year appear to be well over 50 million. It will cost me around 12k to develop the web interface, API, and application. This idea should be fairly easy to implement and I would imagine that it will sort of take off on its own. In addition, I would be outsourcing the work, so all I need to do is tell the developers what to do, aside from some administrative leg work.
the problem is that I still need to give up time to make it happen and get the money. And even though the potential for success is huge and easy, I don't want to put my main project to the side at such a critical period. But then again, I am the type of person who likes to do a ton of stuff at once, so maybe I can do it..
So is there anybody out there who has been successful with two start-ups at once? I think that the answer to my question is a simple no. If I think economically about it, then I should know that I can't be in two places at once. And I will be foregoing money that my main start-up needs. However, the unrealistic side of me keeps saying to do it.
Any opinions?

100% of the time I have more than 1 project/revenue stream in motion, preferably in non-identical but synergistic industries. I want to use a shared infrastructure, but not have all of my eggs in a single basket.
The risk is that by taking away your focus from #1, it goes to hell, and since you never gave your full attention to #2, it never takes off.
It's possible to juggle many small tasks, but the larger the task, the more difficult it is to juggle. And it sounds like you've got some very large tasks (don't forget on #2 - it's always more work than you think it will be).
I personally don't believe anyone can give 100% on multiple large projects. Either one requires all the energy and the other suffers, or neither one receives enough energy and they both fail.
You're the only one who can be the judge of if can handle two huge projects at once.
Personally I think its a risk as before you know it both ideas can go down the pan if they do not have 100% of your focus and commitment. Also worth noting that your mobile idea will not be as easy as you think. Dealing with outsourcers can be a nightmare you often have to keep a close eye on their work.

Thanks everyone. I probably should not have even made this post. I know what I have to do. I will just sit on this one or just let it go, so I don't lose focus.

Thanks! I am not going to share the exact details of it because I might want to develop it in the future. It is not a productivity app, although it can make people more productive in a way. The app is based around supply and demand of a certain product, combined with gps. My plan was actually to develop this app with the intent to make an early exit sale so I could focus on my main company.
Just a thought, but you may consider licensing your second pet project after some initial development. That way the licensee does all the marketing and you get paid royalties. Would cut your work load down a bit and reduce your costs. Of course profits not as much, but heck if you got 50% of what you projected for half the work that seems okay to me.

If you're just going to sit on your idea or let it go, something tells me you don't really believe the above.

Entrepreneurial A.D.D or EADD for short. Pronounced EEEE - ADD (from the word addition)
Execution is everything... Oh I just thought of a trillion dollar idea I have to cut this short![]()

Depends on how you look at it. I am already worked 40 hours per week at my full time job, I'm working close to another 40 hours per week with starting my business, and planning a wedding. It's really a matter of not having the time. So if I have something that could possibly be so good, then why move on it too early? If you're just going to sit on your idea or let it go, something tells me you don't really believe the above.
And a projection is worthless unless it actually happens.

I have actually read a little about something like this. I get a new idea every day. I think this is good and bad. It keeps the creative thought going, but it can be distracting.Entrepreneurial A.D.D or EADD for short. Pronounced EEEE - ADD (from the word addition)
Got that right...and a great idea can easily fall if the execution sucksExecution is everything...
