    Default Buying A Domain Name

So, I plan on buying a domain name and I was going to use GoDaddy (good or bad idea?) but I was curious about the registration length. Lets say I select two years and then my website takes off, once the two years are up can someone take my domain name or what? What about the certify domain option and privacy/protection options? Also, adding email addresses and such?

I'm just buying the domain so no one else takes it at the moment and then I'm going to be working with a programmer to create my website later on. I completely forgot about hosting, get it now through GoDaddy or worry about it later with my programmer?

    thanks, Drew.

You'll have the option to renew it before the expiration date. No worries. You probably won't need the other stuff, maybe private registration if you don't want people (or google) to know you own the site, but that's it. Definitely not email; your hosting company should hook you up with unlimited email accounts for free.

I'd go with namecheap.com personally, but I've used both. As kwerner stated, you'll have the option to renew it before anyone else can.

Thanks for both of your input. I went with GoDaddy. They really try to hit you with a ton of extra crap but I didn't buy any of it!

    Drew,

Buy it through GoDaddy, but host it elsewhere is the general opinion.

Before you buy, Google GoDaddy Coupons to find a discount code.

One thing you'll find is that GoDaddy (and others) will play you like they're fishing. They'll hook you with a .com domain, free privacy, etc., but next year, your $7.99 special will mushroom to $20 or so.

Once you are into the signup, extend it for as long as you can, assuming the discount carries out. I registered my last domain for 10 years, but all are at the discounted price (and, it's BFLBob.com, so I know I won't drop it.)

For hosting, I like Hostgator. MJ has a link pop up every so often where the first month is one cent.

Great advice - I have around 100 or so domains with Godaddy and save a few hundred $ a year doing a quick search for coupons. If I had to redo everything I wouldn't use Godaddy simply because all of the upsells are crazy annoying and eventually they even start calling you to try to upsell you more.

One day I'll get around to moving everything over to a better service but right now it's low on the list of priorities.
