Default Minecraft Game Creator Makes $100K A Day

"Developed by a single over the past year -- Swedish programmer Markus Persson -- Minecraft has nearly one million registered users.

"The premium version, which costs around $14, has so far earned Persson more than $800,000. About $100,000 of that has flooded in over the past 24 hours, according to a message on his website which claims it is now shifting more than 10,000 paid versions of the game every day."

Epic Fail Spiderman was just taken aback by the womans alien googly eyes...

Ahem. Seems minecraft is getting lots of exposure. So let's see.. People play it and like it. They spread word of mouth. Other people hear about it from news, they too play it to see what the mess is about. Success invites success, huh?

I found this pretty ironic as my younger brother has been begging our parents to let him buy this game for a few days now and he finally bought it last night.

I'd like to know how word spread about the game and why everybody is so anxious to buy it. It looks to me like an overpriced "Runescape", if any of you know that game (again, my brother).

I suppose that this also shows the value of going it alone- nobody would be making NEAR that amount from one game if it was developed by a giant team from a large studio and then distributed by another company etc. etc. etc. (like most commercial games out there).

I'm not sure how it grew.. I saw it quite some time ago, played it even. I didn't really like it much

But some people have made really neat pictures and landscapes. In a way it's like legos.

Making games for people to play is it's own beast. The ones that have a lot of heart put into them often stand out from the crowd, but even many of those fail to really manage to become popular enough / get properly monitized. There is another game I'd like to know how well it's doing, because I've been playing it off and on for a few years. Deadfrontier.. Apparently in my absence they've been moving on to 3D using unity3d instead of adobe flash, and will be producing some press media... Their current press information still cites the older company, which has a website that seems not to have been updated in 3 years.

But that's just getting sidetracked... From what I've seen recently, there has been a lot of debate as to how long it should be taking Notch to set up his business. Seems many fans are crazy enough to expect weekly updates, and him to get all the hiring/legalities/office space (he turned down a place because he doesn't want to commit to a 3 year lease) etc. In order within a few months... They (his commenter's) also keep referring to it as a small business.

Anyway, I'm curious how he'll continue to monetize once the game's sales have trickled down. Will he be planning major expansions to sell? Or is part of the point of hiring and starting up a 'small business' to produce entirely new game assets?

... Hey Jazz? If you read this, maybe you could ask your little brother what he likes about the game for us? I'm wondering if the game itself was the main selling point for him, or it's popularity.

Sidenote: Runescape was pretty special when it was released. Free, 3D mmorpg in your browser. Plus it was "different", and by that I mean the kiddies were too young to know the gameplay is a de-evolution from the everquest clones back to Ultima Online.
