Default Researching info on Music Industry

    Hey guys,

I have this idea about starting a business in music industry. And it can become BIG. But I need to do some research on current trends, standards and etc. in this industry. Anyone knows some blogs or sites that are very informative?

Maybe even someone is interested in trying out themselves in music industry biz?

BTW, if you are a programmer, hit me up with PM cuz I have an offer for ya

    Cheers

Billboard magazine would be a good resource. NAMM is another good resource.

    GymJunkie,

I hope you find the two sites below useful.

The first is maintained out of Scotland by a cool cat named Andrew Dubber. He has a pretty good grasp of what is happening in the music industry, globally, as his readership is international. His outlook on music tends to be optimistic -- he probes for the positive in a situation -- despite all of the doom and gloom propagated elsewhere. He's open to communicating with his readers, so don't hesitate to contact him.

The second site is a music magazine published out of Los Angeles. Very informative articles and the interviews, with industry pros are insightful. Much success with your new idea.

Now that Andrew Dubber looks like gold now for me!!! If I could partner up with him that would be awesome! Thanx a mil for that link!
    Other links are great too!

Now it's on me to learn as much as I can on this industry and start looking for people who can help get it off the ground.

    Cheers

I co-founded a company in the music biz a few yrs ago that did live recording of a concert and turned out studio quality CD's (via some propprietary software/methods) for purchase of that very show within 20 or so minutes after the show. It was a few years ago, early on in the big music label struggles so it was tough to change minds at that time, but that landscape has changed dramatically.

Thanx! I have abandoned this idea because I'm not good at this niche and there is too much stuff to learn. And with my new project I wouldn't have to for it

I don't know exactly what you're trying to do in the music industry, and I don't know if this would be any help or not; but if you're starting a record label (which is what I did some time ago), it requires minimum capital. Back in 2007 it cost me around $700 dollars to open one up with out a physical building (something you don't necessarily need when first starting out considering the quality of personal computers now days, but would be nice to have so clients and future clients wont be running through your home all hours of the day). The three main problems I encountered in the music industry are:
    1.Contacts
2.Money for marketing and promotions (of course; I was only 19 in 2007 btw, and although marketing online is cheap and useful, it isn't the holy grail of letting people discover you or your artist; see #3),
3.Entering into a crowded market: How do you separate yourself and your artist from all of the other rappers/hip-hop labels, bands/rock-labels, singers, etc when every one else and their mother are trying to accomplish the same goal as you. Just like how every one in the world can't be rich; every one in the world can't be famous musicians, but it is possible/ anything is possible. What you need to separate yourself from the rest depends on the type of person you are. If you or your artist have a great new unique sound, then obviously thats a way. There are other ways but ultimately its up to you to find the perfect way.

When I came up with the idea back in 2007, it was something that I though would be a easy task considering my uncle was a local rapper in Louisiana and I use to hang around a rap group back when I went to high school in Atlanta. It was all but easy, and I wouldn't let anyone else tell you other wise. I didn't have the time or motivation to continue in the music biz, considering the air force was taking up all of my time (working 12 hours a day of f-16s suck), and the fact that I was also educating myself on forex trading and buying a strip club; so I handed it over to my little brother (he's more musically talented than me) and gave the word out about him. Now he gets alot of attention in the music biz in Louisiana. So while he's doing that I can focus even more on buying my strip club and open myself to other avenues. Like I said I don't know if this is of any help, and I'm not trying to discourage anyone, but this is just how it played out for me. It could turn out for the better or worse for you, but how would you know if you never tried? But you already knew that didn't you?
