Default Telemarketing: Try to sell on the phone or leave an offer?

I am starting a business that generates leads for dentists via local search results. The website is almost done and I will soon hire a guy to telemarket my offer of 5 free leads with no obligations. I know that lead generation is a tough business so I will be very clear that I am not expecting any commitments, only offering a preview of my services.

I expect that my cold calls will almost always run into a secretary. I will have a few options at this point:

    1. Give the offer to the secretary and ask her to pass it on. This feels like the worst option.
    2. Ask to speak to the dentist. If busy ask for a good time to talk to him directly, but make sure to get him on the phone.
    3. Ask for a fax or email and send over my offer. Then follow up the next day.

I'm leaning towards the 3rd option, but it has more parts and may lose potential clients in the process. For you guys who have done this sort of thing, what do you think is the best strategy? I'm open to any advice.

Tim Ferris mentions this in his book:
Call 30 minutes before they open or 30 minutes after they close. Get to the decision maker no matter what.

Another thing you can try is getting a list of new businesses from your Chamber of Commerce. Most new dentists don't start up with a secretary. They would also need the leads more than anyone.

I tried this local search stuff for my area, exact same strategy, but didn't have the patience to wait for rankings. I hope it goes a lot smoother for you.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

So you are cold calling the dentists to offer your services? A lot of times dentists will be busy with a patient and it will be almost impossible to get past the gatekeeper (secretary).

Yes it is best to call during off hours. Leaving direct response material is not bad either, as that is simply a numbers game (well, it all is, but anyway). Are you looking for phone scripts? I have some available but are based on getting appointments.

I like the idea about calling during off hours, sounds like a great way to get to the boss. I will probably do that as well as leave some sort of message with the secretary during business hours (since I have so many dentists to market to)

Is there a way to get that list of new businesses online? Most areas will not be local to me so this would help tremendously.

I would love to get those phone scripts Webjunky. I haven't really cold called before and if nothing else having a script will make it so I don't second guess myself about the words.

I personally have found that leaving the offer is a complete waste of time and you should try and get your point across over the phone as quickly as possible.

As soon as I stopped leaving offers, I was generating interest and even gained 2 customers by being a little bit more across and trying to sell it.

Now, that is not to tell you to go full out sales tactics and be overly aggressive, just get your point across by making them make the decision then.

It is better to be told No, then maybe.

I would love to see those scripts!

There are plenty of places to get lists of dentists. Go to an insurance company's website like Aetna and do a seach for dentist there.

For just a general list of dentists I could even use the yellowpages. What I'd love to get ahold of is an online resource for new dental offices. because they are the dentists who could really use my service (ie my true target market)

Please do not take offense to this, but please... get off your ass and go down to the local chapter of the chamber of commerce. everyone wants to be so lazy and find everything online. guess what.... you are never going to get anywhere with that because you are on a level playing feild with a bunch of wolves. You want to get an advantage, take a walk or drive down there, get some info from them... and talk to everyone on your way.

I have gotten most of my business for my B&M business from being out and stopping and talking to people... all the sudden i find out they are an owner of a ton of dealerships or whatever and they have work for me.... now since i have created a report with them the business tie is even stronger. You will never get anywhere searching online.

No offense taken, I'm asking for an online resource because I need one in order to look this info up for all markets that are not local (which is the vast majority of them) The local chamber of commerce has very limited use to me.
