Default What makes a good business name?

Creating and choosing a name for my potential business is very frustrating. What makes a good name?

Should it be indicative to the type of business that you're starting? ie: home depot, Office Max, Burger King

Or should it be separate and unrelated, ie apple, yahoo, google etc

I feel like it should be brandable, and relevant to my "niche" or target audience--

    My question is,

What steps do you guys take to go through the process of naming your business?

I feel like it's something I should tackle before addressing other things.

But it's easier said than done, especially when you have a million names running through your head. When you have so many potential winners, it's tough to rate or gauge the potential in each of them.

When we are trying to find a name for our RE businesses we generally choose the mascots of the local high schools. That way we get instant community identification. Examples: Charger Properties, Wildcat Rentals, Yellowjacket Real Estate. Of course our businesses are very localized and specialized.

Runum's reply is excellent, especially if you are starting a business that serves locally. If you have an online business, I would go with an "indicative" name that will come up with people's searches. But rarely does a name have "pop" enough to appeal on its own. You should be very active in promoting your name, whatever you choose it to be. Press releases, partnerships and affiliate programs are all ways to get that name out the to develop the cachet you'll need with your customers.
