Inspired by recent events, and yes, Jeff Foxworthy, I give you:

You Might Be a Sidewalker When... (VIDEO)

Warning: Contains Vile, Rated-R Language (About 20 F-bombs) and is likely to insult many.
:groove:

:hurray:
You Might Be a Sidewalker When…

I also dropped this in the "comedy" section versus the "educational section" ... hopefully it meets that expectation.

Tipping 20%? What the...?? Only in America I guess?

"It's not tipping I believe in - It's Over Tipping" ~ Vincent Antonelli

Great Video MJ! Love the F-Bombs. It shows how passionate you are. You should start a series of sidewalking videos.

YES!
"Have you heard about this BITCH in Michigan"
Best line I've ever heard. I don't laugh out loud often but this did it for me.

So listen, MJ, you've gotta do this more regularly. I'm telling you, this could blow up big time.
I can see this getting VERY big in the youtube space.

There's a whole subsection of teens and college kids who share your views and don't have a voice on the internet and you're filling that niche with a video like this. Your blunt attitude, and passion are pefect. lovelovelovelove <3<3<3

I don't want to come off as a downer, but I'd really like to see more of these vids and have a few short tips:
  1. Shorter videos are more 'sharable'. When a friend shares a 7 min video, there's 7 mins worth of 'social currency' they're spending. If the video's decreased to only 2-3 mins, There's decreased social currency that goes into it.
  2. I can actually see each "you might be a sidewalker" as it's own video. People would have more incentive to share them in conversations. If I'm talking to my bro about our deadbeat cousin, I'd share a 'you might be a sidewalker' video that directly references his character, without also sharing 10 other irrelevant ones.
  3. Segmenting and music make a HUGE difference with audience retention. When we were working on a youtube campaign for Showtime we split-test this and the results were CRAZY. Music drives retention, segmentation drives engagement.
  4. We're so far away from you. I wish we were close enough to see your face.
  5. I'm pretty sure they're outside of 'titlesafe' which means that there are a few people watching the video on their Smart TVs or some mobile devices that just can't see the "free download" text.

Last month for 2 weeks I experimented with a "Rant-A-Day" just to see the viability of actually doing daily videos ON TOP of client work and product creation and customer support. Each day the quality of the videos got better and better... By the end of the second week I was able to get a half-decent image with integrated music, segmentation, multimedia integration, and custom thumbnails for each.

Example:
At the end of the 2 week process, each video only took me 1 hour total (between writing, shooting, + editing). I think it's something that's totally viable for you to do twice a week.

Many popular youtubers with their own product lines (Michelle Phan, Soap Queen, etc.) run contests through their youtube channel for each product launch. Back when I was selling videogame ebooks I used my Minecraft channel to launch my ebook to the gamers and it was the best launch I ever had.

Once you meet the minimum quality threshold, you'll have hundreds of shares for each video. Think about what a a popular youtube channel would do for your next book launch.

Congrats on making such a freakin funny video!

Downer? This is great advice. I don't disagree with it. (Rep++)

Segmentation is the quick cuts right? Is this something a non-video person could master? Or more of a software issue?

Not to totally derail the thread here, but...

@DennisDuty Your video was f*cking hilarious. Also, I love OoT so that probably helped.

Anyway you've given me a whole new idea explosion on how to produce content with videos aside from what I'm already doing. So a little rep transfer for you from what little I have.

LOL my ex used to make fun of me because of my tipping style, even when I was broke I'd tip like I was rich, but she used to be a waitress so she loved it...basically I just pick a nice round number that seems like enough...tab is $115.52? So I used to ask her umm what's a good tip, $160? $170? The looks were priceless. Supposedly I "made their day" and made up for all the shitty tippers they'd get the rest of the night. That job is rough.

Segmentation is a term I might have invented (I don't hear anybody else talk about it) referring to distinguishable breaks in a video.
When you have a book, there are definite chapter breaks.

Even this text has definite breaks and stopping points.

Big long chunks of text are difficult to process.
It's not JUST for giving people a stopping point,
but also to give them mental space to compartmentalize things in a way that their brain sees fit.

Video needs the same space.
Needs to be broken up into different segments in order to be understood.

In the above example, I have a definite structure and visual indicators to help people move from one "thing" onto the next one.
That's the type of segmentation that we've found very effective after analyzing averate retention rate.
Another GREAT way to do this is with MUSIC.

NPR (Freakonomics Radio in general) is the master of music driven segmentation,
they're a radio show and have no visual cues to divide up their media,
so it's ll done with music.

In this video (this is the one in my sig) I use music in a similar way to break up the content into pieces:
Cases I do this can be seen at 2:08 and 3:49.

The editing you'd need to do is simple. Jump cuts are very easy to master.
Using any video editor that has the Cut/Splice/Split/Blade tool, you can chop up the video and press "delete" to the clips you want to throw away.
Windows movie maker can accomplish this.

However, to get a more expensive feel, you'll need something a bit more hefty than Windows Movie Maker or iMovie.
They're okay for sharing your kids soccer videos, but they have clumsy controls and severe limitations (only 1 video and 1 audio track, for instance).
Some think it's not all that bad, but it's a bullet train to a vid that looks like a school project.

The perfect transitional video editor is Adobe Premiere Elements. Very cheap (less than $100 in most cases) and has all the essential features of the pro video editors. There's even a "basic" and "advanced" layout option, so you only have to work with what you're comfortable.

Another great option is CamtasiaStudio 8. They have a multitrack editor that's surprisingly advanced, with the added benefit of being a leading screen-capture tool as well. Premiere if you're just doing video, Camtasia if you need to capture your screen.
